Mary Poppins- ( 1964) Staring Dick Van Dyke, and Julie Andrews
This is a timeless classic for everyone to enjoy. I never tire of hearing the songs from this movie. It takes me back to the day when I discovered this perfect "Nanny" and prayed they would send her my way. Why, because my brother and I were the two children in the movie! We had gone through several Nannies in our young life. Enough of us on with the review.
The setting, 1920's, England, Seventeen Cherry Street and now we are off.......
The movie starts off with Mr. and Mrs. Banks and their two children, Jane and Michael. Mr. Banks is a stuffy older gentleman that is an executive at the local bank. Mrs. Banks is always off on a march for women's rights and displays it proudly. The Admiral that lives in a boat shaped home a few doors down are constantly on the roof shooting off the cannon at a specific time every day, you know when this is about to happen. The staff readies itself for the entire house to shift a bit, it adds the first bit of humor in the film.
Outside stands a long line of Nanny's wanting the position to care for young Jane and Michael. Mr. Banks awaits them in his study, as the children view them from their room. Deciding that they know what kind of Nanny they want they write a list of what attributes this Nanny must possess. Their father quickly dismisses this as none sense tears up the letter and throws it in the fire place. Soon you see the pieces sucked up through the chimney and out.
A strong eastwind comes in blowing all the Nanny's standing in the wait to be seen. As Miss. Marry Poppins slowly glides effortlessly to the ground holding her umbrella. Brushing her self off she is greeted at the door and taken to the study. Upon meeting with Mr. and Mrs. Banks she opens the letter that is crumpled and worn, the exact letter Mr. Banks had tossed into the fireplace earlier. Mary Poppins reads the requirements off quickly and states " I will take the job, and shall start immediately."
Jane and Michael find her fascinating, and everything they had ever wanted in a Nanny. Immediately she begins to teach the children about how to properly behave. Bringing with her the never-ending bag that hold all her worldly possessions, this bag is surely magical. The children stand in awe of all of her capabilities. Once her room is set up, she begins to tell the children how she expects their room to look. She teaches them that cleaning is a game, everything you do can is made a game causing the time to pass quickly and the task more enjoyable.
Mary Poppins best friend Bert, is a chimney sweep by night and an artist by day. Mary has the uncanny ability to take the children on adventures into the artwork at will with Bert's prompting. Always tell him, "Just this one time Bert!". Taking the children too magical, wonderlands of carousel horse races, under the sea Diners, and kingdoms' where animals talk.
I believe what Mary Poppins had intended was to bring a family closer together. A father so absorbed in what he feels is proper for his family. Work becoming more important a factor than happiness, smiling and laughing had become a taboo. He was not there to enjoy his family, he was there to take care of his family. A wife absorbed in her duties to unite women that the children although she loved them dearly was a mere after thought. The children had become unruly trying to gain the attention of the parents especially the father.
Mary brings the family together, giving them the ability to laugh and enjoy life. Once her mission was complete, the eastwind magically took her off to another place.
The cast is perfection in itself, the acting divine, leaving a taste of wonderment and smiles on all who watch it. The awards this picture has gotten are many and more detailed specific information can be found at
http://www.reelclassics.com/Musicals/MaryPoppins/marypoppins.htm . Anyone who is a Mary Poppins fan will enjoy this website, it features clips of the movie, as well as quotes, and songs as originally sung by Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. I could go on and on with this review, but I feel it would take away from the movie and make this review entirely too long.
Our copy of this movie sits untouched right now on the shelf next to the VCR. My children have grown. The play station has taken over, newer movies have filled the shelf. Gone are the days of "Bed knobs and Broomsticks," "Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang," and "The Sound of Music." I miss those days dearly, and in my room I occasionally drift off for a day to have my own movie marathon while the kids are at school. I miss my little ones, the day we would sit and has popcorn all gathered on Mom's big bed. All of us in our long jammies, laughing, hugging, tickling and enjoying one another.
Maybe this Mommy forgot to grow up too? :)
