Bag of choice for lightweight mountaineering

The Marmot Never Summer Sleeping Bag is a must have 3-4 season cold weather bag. It is made of 600 fil goose down and weighs only a mere 3 pounds 9 ounces. For a zero degree bag, it is quite easy to pack and highly compressible. The bag is a mummy configuration and has a full length draft tube. It also includes a stuff sack and large storage bag.

I usually take this bag for all my winter or cold weather trips. The shell is made of nylon and is not an all weather bag. I usually keep everything in my pack inside a large waterproof liner so having built in water resistance was not important to me. I also skip the stuff sack and use a medium sized compression bag to haul the bag to get the maximum size reduction when packed.

This bag works well to temperatures around freezing. Since I like being a little cooler when sleeping, I have been comfortable in -10 degree weather in this bag with a fleece base layer on. In colder weather, I have used a silk bag liner to increase the warmth value of the bag and I always take my thermarest Prolite 4 to use as a sleeping pad.

Overall, this is a quality made cold weather bag and can be used in almost all tented conditions. The limits of this bag are in conditions where the weather dips below -10 and or you are confronted with a situation where you have to bivy without protection in wet weather.
