When I got Mario Kart Wii this summer. I had a blast! This is the best Mario Kart game since Mario Kart 64. This is why i think it is an awesome game.
Twelve characters can race all at once. And there are tons of unlockable content to keep you playing for hours on end.
Let's start with the controls, you have four ways to play! You have the wii remote with the new wii wheel, the wii remote by itself(which operates just the wii wheel) , the wii remote and nunchuk, classic controller, and the gamecube controller.
Some may not like the wii wheel( I didn't like it myself ) but it's supposed to be more challenging to play with than the other controller methods.
For those of you who want to know the controls before you play the game, here they are for each control set or layout.
The wii remote with the wii wheel are as follows:
Turn the wii wheel left if you want to go left, and right if you want to turn right. The wii wheel works just like, yep you guessed it, a steering wheel. Up on the control pad throws items in front of you(bannanas, koopa shells, itme boxes, etc.)
The 1 BUTTON IS THE BRAKER/REVERSE
The 2 button makes you accelerate.
A button has the camera look behind you(this is a new feature to Mario Kart).
The B button shoots items either behind you or in front of you
depending on the item( I'll get to those later in this review)
Home button takes you to the home menu screen.(I know it's crazy isn't it.)
The plus button pauses the game.
And you shake the wii wheel/wii remote to do tricks. You have to have the right timing to do this
Those are the controls for the wii wheel/wii remote if you have it on auto drift.
I will only state what is changed if you you choose manual drifting.
up on the control pad uses items, down throws them behind you.
which makes the B button the drifting button.
This may look easy, but it will take a while getting use to this layout. true to its word. If you use the wii wheel through most of you gameplay time when you go on wifi to compete, a golden wheel will appear by your name.
Second is the wii remote with the classic controller. This is one of my preferred control layouts to use.
First joystick controls steering.(This is also used to deploy items behind/infornt of you)
The L button uses items.
The + button pauses the game.
The "a" button accelerates
The "b" button is the brakes
The R button is used for drifting (if it is on manual)
The "x" button looks behind you
And the control pad is used for performing tricks. IF you have a bike you can press up or down on the control pad to do wheelies.
Next is the Gamecube controller, another one of my personal choices for the control layout. It is exactly identical to the classic controller in control layout except for the following:
There is no Home Button and the Start button is the pause button.
Next is the Wii remote and nunchuk, and for this game it doesn't feel right using this as a contoller choice option.(At least not to me anyway.) If you want to be unique and use this control scheme then by all means go for it. :)
On the nunchuk you have the control stick for steering,
the c button looks behind you and the Z button is to use items.
On the wii remote the A button accelerates and the B button is for drifting.
The gameplay is the main part of this game. But sadly this time around you can't play two player grand prix mode. But if that was allowed, the game would be way too easy. the Game starts off nice and easy with luigi circuit. Then it gets more challenging with the fiery depths of Bowser castle, with the fireballs and twomps trying to crush you , to the mushroomy bouncing of mushroom gourge, this game has a wide variety of tracks this time around. With 32 in all 16 new and 16 retro courses.
there a 4 engine course in this game, starting with 50 cc, 100cc, 150cc and 150 cc mirror with 8 cups. Which means it you will be racing 32 cups. But don't worry it wont get tiresome and boring , there are a lot of shortcuts you will find to make this game exhilarating.
Now when you play this game you will notice that you cna play with bikes and karts! The bikes are cool because youc an use wheelies to get speed boosts , but their drifiting is sharper than a kart.
Karts may not be able to do wheelies but they can drift easier and longer for a longer boost of speed.
Now this time around (if you aren't includingmario kart DS) there is online play. When you put the disc in for the first time it will ask you if you want to install the mario kart channel on the home screen. Say yes, and you're seconds away from online racing with people around the world. The battle system is fun but is shorter now. You only get three minutes for balloon battle. IN balloon battle you start with three balloons, however when you run out. You start with three again in the same race. AND in coin battle you have to you race and battle to get the most coins. There are 3 minutes to play in both. SO you may want to race people around the world on your favorite tracks, which is the better way to go in my opinion.
This series is finally going in the right direction and can more fun to play than the sonic series ever though about being. THAT'S RIGHT SONIC YOU'RE TOO SLOW.
If you have a wii, then BUY THIS GAME,
And if you don't have a wii, then buy one then buy this game.
