Author's Review
The Magellan RoadMate 2000 is a good basic GPS, sold at a reasonable price. It offers routing based upon shortest, fastest, minimum use of freeways, maximum use of freeways. The unit computed a route of over 700 miles in less than 15 seconds, and routes of less than 350 miles in 5 to 10 seconds. I am amazed at the detail in the maps. When viewing the map in the 840-foot range, it even identifies creeks (by name). When I deviate from its planned route it notifies me by voice within 5 seconds; sometimes it suggests "Make a legal U-turn when safe to do so," and other times it simply re-plans to a new route. All this occurs in a matter of seconds. A nice feature is its ability to compute multi-destinations into a single trip. User interface is via touch screen, and the system is fairly intuitive. On the downside, the user cannot add, delete, or modify Points of Interest. Also, on-line support is not good; however, telephone support is much better. If all you require is navigation assistance (i.e., no picture viewer or music player) this is a good unit.
