Magellan Crossover GPS

Date of Review: Nov 3, 2008

I bought this item so that my wife could use it to get around for work, or we could use it on vacation, driving, hiking or whatever.  We've used it in major cities, small towns, the mountains and everywhere in between.

The GPS reciever is decent in the open, but all but worthless amongst urban high-rises or tall trees, as expected.  It's a little slow to spool up completely and sometimes gets confused itself.  It definitely has a hard time coming up with the best route to get you there.  It's only better than a paper map because it vocalizes the directions.  Frequently though, you have to use it more like a "homing device" to get you into the target area, so that you can navigate your way to the actual location through intuition.  My wife is getting really frustrated with it, and I actually came to this site to read up on Garmin and in-dash GPS/stereo units.

This unit also offers an SD card slot and MP3 player, but don't bother.  It has a one track mind and can't give directions and play music at the same time.
