Adequate, nothing spectacular

Date of Review: Nov 25, 2002

The Bottom Line:  If you really need a case for your GPS, this is acceptable. It is more of a storage case than a working case though, with no see-through window.
I got this case for a Magellan Sportrak Pro handheld GPS unit. The case is advertised as being for the Meridian series of units, but the packaging that came with this had a sticker that said "now fits the sportrak series also" or words to that effect.
It is well-padded and given the ruggedness of the GPS unit itself, I am sure it will be well protected in this case. But the case is not very roomy and the fit is quite tight, making it tricky to put the GPS in or take it out in a hurry (the opening is not enormous either). Also, the storage for the extra set of batteries is in the form of two rubber bands stitched to the inside of the case, not a pocket as such. After a few times of putting the GPS in and taking it out, the batteries slip out of these rubber bands and end up at the bottom of the case. This can then make it difficult to fit the GPS in and zip up the case.
The case does come with a very wide and strong belt loop allowing you to attach it to a belt or a fanny pack securely. Since it is not velcro fastened or anything like that, there is no chance of this thing coming off accidentally and falling down etc. By the same token, if you need to take the case off, you need to take off the belt first.
One other problem with the unit that is a little weird and may be unique to me is that the padding is made of some material that seems to have a great affinity for the cuticles on the back of my hands. If I am not extra careful while my hand is inside the case, the padding tends to tear at these cuticles quite painfully (no blood so far, though!).
A see-through window would have made the case more useful (though, obviously much less useful as purely a layer of protection).
