MagLite AAA Solitaire Flashlight..This Little Light Shines!

Date of Review: Dec 16, 2007

The Bottom Line:  The MagLite Solitaire is a little giant among flashlights in its class, worth the cost for their versatility.
You have to love marketing. Whenever a company can make their brand name synonymous with the product, they have scored big. Frankly at my place, there are up to our expectations of that product, like the a few products that we call by the brand name, as they have come to live up to our best expectations of that product; enter the MagLite

MagLite is long known for their die hard reliability and bulletproof durability. I keep the foot long MagCharger at my bedside for reliable illumination and in the chance I should ever need to, enlighten an intruder. TheSolitaire
however, will do little more than light the way, barely, but don't let that dissuade you from reading on.

The 3 3/16" inch barrel is small, just small enough to make a difference on your keychain, in a dark auditorium as you fumble with a video camera, your keys in a parking garage or to discreetly read the check at a chichi restaurant.

Loaded with a single AAA battery the Solitaires hi intensity spot to flood adjustable beam while not capable of reaching targets 3 feet or more away, it is spot on for close work while being extraordinarily portable, fitting unobtrusively in the smallest pockets or cases. I have used mine for close emergency electrical work, on a stage for reading set lists, working on a computer, and even looking into my Goldens ear for ticks. Your possibilities are bounded only by your imagination.

One of the really terrific features of the Solitaire is the modular construction, allowing for easy purchasing of parts when they are needed. Their website has a full schematic with parts numbers for easy ordering or over the counter purchases at better hardware store/ dealers.

Using the MagLite AAA Solitaire Flashlight is as easy as twisting the barrel to switch it on and set the beam to narrow or spot. While I wouldn't trust the Solitaire to help the kids get about on Halloween I wouldn't hesitate to include it in a small toolkit, camera bag, purse or car to use for close work. Its aluminum barrel is durable, water and shock resistant comes in a variety of colors, including black, red, turquoise, grey and darker grey. Battery life is approximately 2.5 -3 hours, just a little shorter than stated on the manufacturer's website, to my experience with Duracell batteries though MagLite claims a 3.5 hour battery life.

I like the MagLite AAA Solitaire Flashlight, and have a few lying around the home office and car. I gave my wife a couple which she keeps in her purse and in her emergency kit. At under $5.00 each they are a real bargain, making nice stocking stuffers. I try to keep a few for gifts for nieces and nephews as well as business associates. The attached key fob, make them a natural for key rings. This one gets a hearty endorsement form me.
