Product Review

No problems yet

by   btd73 ,   Dec 29, 2000

Pros:  Cost

Cons:  Not a Sony, if that bothers you. Odd shape.

The Bottom Line:  It's a great alternative to the Sony brand. It's cheaper, just as reliable and works the same. The odd shape may not fit in some holders.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

You finally snagged the elusive PS2 and need to get a memory card for it, so you look at the rack and side by side is the official Sony card and the generic MadCatz card.

Sony is Sony. You know it will be sturdy and dependable. You also know you will pay for that Sony name on the front of it.

So you turn to the MadCatz card which is priced $5 or $10 less. You wonder about the reliability. So did I, but I picked it up anyway.

After two months of using it, there's no problems. You memory card should be something you buy and then forget about. It should sit in your PS2 for months at a time with no worries, as if it is part of the PS2 itself. This one has, and I've had absolutely no problems with it.

The MadCatz memory card comes with a little plastic case (rather useless) and two little stickers to label them. It costs less than the Sony one and works exactly the same, as far as I've seen, so why shouldn't I give it 5 stars?

Update:
It's been more than a year and mine is still working fine. In fact, I have two now.

There's one negative though, I should add. New PS2 boxes have a memory card holder above where the disk is held. They are made to fit Sony brand memory cards. Because the MadCatz card has an odd shape, it doesn't fit quite right. I took a pair of scissors and cut the holder a little to make room, and now it fits fine. This could be considered a serious detraction though if you plan to use the memory card holder in the new PS2 boxes often.
