Product Review

Great for large babies and taller parents.

by   eunnycook ,   Dec 28, 2005

Pros:  great for fat and tall babies, superlight, tall parent must have

Cons:  small storage area, no window in the sunshade

The Bottom Line:  The best choice for any chubby - tall babies with tall parents. Super light, high quality, great for everyday.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

My 1 year old daughter was 32lbs and 33" tall. We had definately outgrown her Graco travel system stroller and I was looking for an umbrella stroller that could handle our robust baby, plus I wanted something lighter. Another huge factor was I am 5'7" and dad is 6'3". We did the WalMart/KMart/Sears thing and the umbrella strollers there were just too cheaply constructed. My daughter was squashed in all of them and the seams on the seats looked like they were going to BUST! I think I am about average height and I was hunching over. My husband pretty much gave up on the stroller search - he said that we would just find one that would suit the baby, then me and he would roll her around for 5 min here and there for fun.

I began my search and found a few brands that I felt were quality. Combi, Inglesina, Maclaren. These fit the weight of our daughter and with everything else, we just pray that she will not set the world record on outgrowing things.

Combi Savvy (+) 5 point adjustable seat belt, great steering, safety bar, cushy washable seat, cute, folds great, light. (-) narrow...baby looked squashed and uncomfortable, short...I had to hunch over to push,
Overall - For the price it did not meet enough of our needs, but it works great for my other friend who is 5'0" and her baby is 1 year and 20lbs.

Inglesina Swift (+) Everything I read sounded great, tallest stroller on market (-) Could not get anyone to deliver to Hawaii so I had to move on.
(blessing in disguise)

Maclaren Volo (+) No assembly, 5 point adjustable seat belt, mesh is strong, baby has plenty of room on sides and above her head, seat is deep, wheels are rubbery - not hard plastic, steers with 1 hand SO EASY, sunshade is nice and big, tall handles - my husband loves to wheel this thing!, folds easily, carry strap, super lightweight!!!, weight max is 55lbs., attractive (-) The "basket" underneath is not really big, but it will hold plenty of snacks, sippy cups and small toys, I wish the wheel lock mechanism was bigger, no window in the sunshade, not cheap.
Overall - It is a dream. The stroller I had been looking for the whole time. Don't waste your time on the others if you have a chubby one like us. We use this stroller almost everyday. Great on a variety of surfaces - pavement, cobblestone, grass, dirt, rocks. Doesn't work in sand - but not a big deal. Our daughter is so happy in it too. She cruised in it thru 3 hours of Christmas shopping hell in the mall, with no problems. Living in Hawaii the mesh was a real treat - no more sweaty fat baby. The thing just steered around tons of obstacles with no problem and it did not hurt my back in the end. There is no cup holder but the sunshade "holds" a small water bottle well. I walked around VERY EASILY steering with 1 hand when I had coffee too. The 5 point seat belt was important b/c the stroller did not offer the bar across the front. The locking mechanism on the rear wheels is hard to push be/c it is a small lever. Most times I have to slip off my flip flop and use my big toe. Have not tried doing it in shoes. It seems like the lever is just too close to the stroller frame. Otherwise it locks fairly easily, so I don't mind kicking off my shoe to do it. Although it is not totally perfect we have 100% confidence in this product. We hope that our baby will still be able to ride in it when she gets to 2 or 3, but we are happy regardless of how long it will be practical for her weight.

I also bought the additional seat cover - that was easy to put on the stroller and it doesn't slip around, so i feel very confident in it also.

The Volo is definately the best choice for our need.
Good Luck!
