Macally Portable Goose Neck USB Video Web Cam - ICECAM
I have just gotten into the MAC world, coming from a long run of PC computers ranging from Dells to Gateways and back again. In my time there, I have seen some awesome PC cameras, some for cheaper than this I am giving the review on. Crossing over to the MAC has not lowered my expectation for GOOD cameras for CHEAP prices. I was floored when this camera didn't live up to my 'old' PC hopes.
First, let me give it to due props. It IS a nice, cheap camera. It does connect to IChat and Yahoo MN very nicely and easily. The install, to actually put the camera on your system, is flawless and smooth. It does come with a one year warranty, which has its positive and negatives. Sadly, if you drop this camera in a bucket of water and it doesn't work afterward, well you're out of luck. The warranty covers a good bit of normal camera malfunctions, including a warranty for the lens...WHICH MOST WEBCAMS DON'T CARRY ON THEIR WARRANTIES. ::claps:: AND, it works with most systems.
ON to the lags - First and foremost, the picture quality - It could be better, honestly. Not a bad quality for caming over the internet to your lover BF or GF, but still. I would like o see a better quality image if I am to spend $25.00 on it. Coming from the PC realm, I have been able to spend less and get better quality. The FPS is 30, which tends to be the default for most webcams, so I can't complain. At least that is 'up to par.'
The flexibility of the camera is very nice to have at work or play. However, it tends to stay in one place and not like to revert to another very easily. I have found leaving my camera in one place for a long time has affected the ability to move with ease afterward. I have no idea WHY this happens, but it does. My friend also has this webcam and his does the same thing - seems to be a product problem.
Overall the camera isn't a bad one for a beginner in webcaming. Honestly, there isn't much else to say about this cam, as most of the information can be found on the box (listed above). I would like to see these features above fixed to actually earn up to the price is it set at, however; when looking at most cameras for MAC users, this MAY be on of the better 'bangs for the buck.' It is all up to personal preference, really. For me, however, I am going to return this and buy a better one.
