Alanis at her Worst

I have never really been a huge fan of Alanis Morrissette, and it was only this morning that I first listened to the MTV Unplugged CD. I only heard it because my partner put it in the CD player to wake him up. I didn't even know he owned this CD until I heard the CD player begin to whirr and spew forth the collective works of Alanis's career to date.
I wasn't quite sure what I was listening to at first. I thought for a brief moment that it was possibly a bad cover version of her songs, but the voice was unmistakably her own, so I dismissed the thought and got up to see what I was hearing. Yes, it was certainly Alanis, but the recording didn't sound as if she had her heart in it. She drudged her way through her repertoire; I have never heard a recording so devoid of soul, so cold and heartless.
Why my partner chose this recording to wake up to is beyond me. I'll have to ask. Perhaps it's just so lifeless, one feels like getting up just to stop the drudgery.
On the positive side, however, I should say that the Unplugged albums as a whole provide relief from the hardness that much of modern music has to offer. In this regard, it does provide a degree of enjoyment, and drags this album from a one-star rating to a two-star.
