The Lost World-Not A "Sucky" Sequel

This review is in response to dcgalaxy's Epinion. I also did not think that The Lost World was a bad sequel, but feel that people expected it to be just like Jurassic Park, and that's where they became discouraged. You have to see this movie in its own light, for unlike many sequels, it can pretty much stand on its own as far as the plot goes.

Jeff Goldblum is the only main character from the first movie that "carries over" into the sequel. You just barely catch a glimpse of Hammond and the two kids. Other than that, the plot is distinct from the first one, other than the fact that there are dinosaurs involved. The plot revolves around the fact that trappers want to bring the dinosaurs to the mainland for a sort of live exhibit, but Goldblum's character wants to stop them because he knows the potential havoc that would ensue. He was hastened to the island in pursuit of his girlfriend, played by Julianne Phillips, who went to the island to study the dinosaurs in their natural habitat. Their acting is decent enough although not exactly Oscar-caliber, and Goldblum is true to expected character.

I found many of the scenes to be intense and suspenseful, especially with the T-Rex's and the trailer/mobile home at the cliff. The T'Rex's and their bone chilling calls always strike fear in my heart when I know they are coming. The film always builds this up well, with loud footsteps in the distance, rustling of trees, and vibrations causing puddles to shiver.

There is plenty of fast-paced action that will keep you on the edge of your seat and/or biting your nails. While Jurassic Park was a blockbuster rating five stars easily, I think that The Lost World deserves its due as well. Unfortunately, it is overshadowed by its predecessor.
