Lost? I'm confused
Date of Review: Dec 15, 2007
The Bottom Line: A great series full of weird and wacky plots.
Did you see the advert earlier in the year ' Don't let Lost be lost to you' or something like that? It referred to the fact that series three of Lost was not going to be on mainstream television. Series one and two had been on channel four and then on one of the Freeview Channels but, having got the viewer hooked, they were now leaving them high and dry.
For the uninitiated Lost is an American series. It began with an airplane crash which left some of the passengers stranded on a small Island in the middle of nowhere. The climate of this Island was seemingly tropical and they soon discovered that the Island was not quite what it seemed. I watched the first episode unsure what to expect and was quickly hooked. Each episode would reveal as many, if not more, new mysteries than it solved. There was a main cast of about 14 passengers with extras appearing on and off. Each week we would learn a little about how one or two of these passengers came to be on this flight and their life back home.
Recently I spotted series two and three in our local blockbusters for a weekly rental, each, of #7. Series two was separated into part one and part two and had to be rented separately. We watched part two to refresh our memory of Lost , and make sure we had seen them all, and then set about renting series three. Mission impossible springs to mind. Our local Blockbusters only had 4 copies of series three and they were always out on hire. As they do not allow reservations these days we gave up and treat ourselves to Lost Series 3, as a Christmas present from us to us.
We bought the boxed set which is Series Three for just under #42 from Asda. With my husband's staff discount we actually paid just over #37 which sounds quite pricey, I know. However in Blockbusters it was nearly #45 and that seems to be the price in most stores. What you get for your money are 6 DVD'S, plus one with extras, all packaged in a nice green box and so this would make a good Christmas gift.

Disc 7 Bonus Features.
The bonus feature disc offers up plenty of information for those into such things. Putting the disc into my computer brings up a screen which has what looks like 6 old black and white TV screens joined together. Four of these , when double clicked on, lead to a shot from Lost which involves pressing some button or other. In doing so you are led to a small menu with some other options. The features include:-
The world of the others.
Crew tribute with Evangeline Lilly.
Lost Flashbacks.
Lost on Location.
The Lost Book Club.
Lost in a Day.
The next Level-Inside the Video Game.
Cast in Clay :The toys of Todd McFarlane
Deleted Scenes
Lost Blooper, Audio Commentaries and more.
As you can see there is plenty on Disc 7 for those interested,
All in all that provides 946 minutes of viewing which I think actually shows that this set is good value for money. I shall definitely be watching again and looking to find new clues to the mystery of Lost. Our copy is widescreen format and suitable for age 15.
Now I do not intend to give any plot details as, for avid fans, that would just spoil the viewing event. For anyone who has not seen Lost you do really need to view from the start to try and ravel the plot. I cannot really say that you need to do that to understand Lost because I still cannot make head nor tail of it. Well that is not strictly true but I do find the series somewhat confusing.
Series three introduces the viewer to some new characters. The others or hostiles who also live on the Island are shown in more detail and at times everything seems a little clearer. What I sometimes do not like about Lost still happens. You finish one episode with high drama but the next episode starts of with something else and may not return to the previous exciting happenings until much later.
The cast of Lost has some great characters and some great performers. One of my favourite characters is Hurley the overweight guy who has just as many big problems with his life back home. Actually all the characters seem to have a little more than their fair share of troubles, what with one thing or another. When the series first hit our screens we were all left thinking that these 'survivors' could actually be dead and in purgatory or even Hell and we are still not sure what is going on. Some theories are that it is all a strange game or a little like life in the film 'The Truman Show' but who knows.
All I can say is that, for me, once I had got back into it, I loved Series Three. It has possibly more twists and turns than the early episodes, has some edge of seats moments and some weird and wonderful plots. Sadly we lose another character who has been a main player since the very start.
As a cult series Lost has many followers and theorists who take the viewing experience to a much deeper level. However that is not Hubby and I. I love the beautiful scenery which comes from Lost being filmed on Hawaii. I love the mystery, strangeness and implausibility of it all. Each episode starts with what soon becomes haunting familiar music. There are one or two lust interests for the girls and the guys. For me Sawyer as the roguish hunk hits the spot every time.
The Lost Series Three has left me biting my nails waiting for Series 4 Four. Oh and the end was totally unexpected. Perhaps that's just me but I did not see what was coming.
