Lonesome Dove: "Far out in the chaparral flats..."

Date of Review:  Aug 26, 2001
The Bottom Line: Every page crammed with beautifully descriptive passages, intensely emotional situations, fast-paced action, and wonderfully drawn characters.
Review: Well, folks, I have a little confession to make. This year I have not been keeping up with my reading as well as I did last year. By this time in 2000, I had read 16 books, totaling over 8,900 pages. This year to date, I?ve read only 8 books...

Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry: It Won the Pulitzer for a Good Reason

Date of Review:  Jul 6, 2001
The Bottom Line: McMurtry brings life to these characters and ropes us into caring about them. Excellent book without a spot that you can skip over.
Review: Lonesome Dove can be real intimidating when you first pick it up to read. The paperback version logs in at 945 pages. To me, it is worth reading every single one of those pages.

In our culture, both on the silver screen and small screen,...

Hell just froze over - I found a Western that I loved!

Date of Review:  Jul 27, 2006
The Bottom Line: The bottom line is practicing its lasso technique
Review: Recently, I finished a book and went to get the next one in my library stack when -gasp- I realized my library stack was gone. Remembering that when we moved the year before, we left almost 50 boxes of books unopened in the basement, I asked Z to go...

The Best Novel Ever Written about the American West

Date of Review:  Oct 4, 1999
Review: Lonesome Dove....hmmmm...you've heard about it, huh? A mini-series several years ago starring Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall. But for many viewers, they never had the distinct PLEASURE of reading the novel of the same name by Larry McMurtry...

It Made a Great Movie

Date of Review:  Jul 12, 2003
The Bottom Line: Memorable characters and a good story
Review: When does 945 pages take no time at all? When you're reading Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove.

From the beginning, McMurtry entertains, amuses, and astonishes the reader with his simplistic and honest view of an era more complicated than it...

A wonderful epic

Date of Review:  Jan 26, 2000
Review: I don't usually like westerns, and I have no idea what possessed me to buy a copy of "Lonesome Dove" at the bookstore one day. I think that I had been having a bad week, and I wanted a long book to sort of lose myself in for awhile. At 1,000+ pages,...

As rugged as two Clint Eastwood movies, and 12x as long!

Date of Review:  Jan 24, 2007
Review: No character ever played by Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, or even my idol Chuck Norris could even come close to being as awesome as Gus McRae,or Deets, or even some of the other fine characters in this epic. Larry McMurtry didn't waste a page of this...

"Sure has been a party Woodrow"

Date of Review:  Jul 19, 2002
The Bottom Line: I would recommend this book to anyone who ever dreamed of being a real cowboy. It shows you what it is to truly be a cow-boy.
Review: This is the most wonderful book I have ever read. I love the age of the cowboys and the cattle drives! Since I was born almost 150 years too late, if I want go there I just pick up my worn out paperback of Lonesome Dove and I'm back there. I have...

The Best of the West

Date of Review:  Sep 10, 2001
The Bottom Line: When you love the story and characters so much that you're sad that you've finished reading it, then that's a good book.
Review: This is a story that draws the reader into it with imagery, and grandness of scale that is seldom written. If you don't come to emotionally invest in each character, you have no soul. Every character is real and grabs your heart and your passion...

Great American Novel

Date of Review:  May 21, 2000
Review: Literary history may prove this to be on e of the greatest pieces of work ever produced in the English language. Larry McMurtry's novel of two "mature" Texas Rangers transcend the Western genre and enters into the realm of human interest. Augustus...
