Author's Review
First off, I'm not prejudice against Linksys so this isn't a bias review!!! I already have two linksys, WRT54G and BEFSR41 which I can say are worthless in terms of EVERYTHING!!!! Alright, let me setup the scenario, there are four people sharing the router.
Lets start w/ stability. Stability is ok when its new. About 2-3 months later, its nothing better than a paperweight. Since all of us heavily use the internet for browsing and downloading, there has been a lot of drops. For the BEFSR41 most times it just stop working completely. The only way to luckily fix it, and I use that term loosely, is resetting the router and hopefully it works. Then I bought a new laptop zd7140us which has an integrated wireless modem so I opted for linksys WRT54G. This works great ............................... in the beginning of course. Now its just another paperweight to another pile of papers sitting right next to the BEFSR41. Again, four people are using this router. I have this router for 2 months and suddenly the wireless part of the router screwed up on me in terms of drops or limited connection (probably firmware malfunction). The drops are so bad that I couldn't even connect to the net for hours. The good thing about this is the people at linksys actually got the LAN working right as oppose to the BEFSR41.
So a new situation occur, my dad bought a computer so now four people are on the LAN connection and I'm on the worthless wireless connection. What to do now?!!! After a long time of research, I decided to purchase a D-Link DI-624 G Rev A and whats ironic about this is that I bought this router used on ebay. Boy can I say this is a blessing of a machine to use being that its used. 4 MONTHS now and 4 people are on the LAN connection and 2 people are on the wireless and I'm able to do everything and anything without any drop!! There was a drop once in the beginning but from then on, nothing wrong has ever happened. The firmware update to the DI-624 had actually increase its stability and firewall. For those who knows what Counterstrike or Starcraft is, those are online games and for me to have a ping of less than 40 with 5 other users online is close to perfect. No lag or drops!!! My downloads are never paused due to connection problems. Like I said, the stability of the DI-624 is absolutely incredible.
The ease of setting up the router is amazingly easy. Even my dad who's second language is English could even setup the router. The menu platform are easy to fill in. After you fill in the required fields, simply click on next to go to the next screen and fill in another field until you click on finish. The DI-624 is so kind enough as to do a thorough check to see if there is a connection unlike the Linksys. The linksys platform are a little more complicated. Where as the D-Link offers the next buttons to go the next page, the Linksys offers tabs. After you fill in the required field, there are no next buttons to go to the next screen but rather tabs. You have to click on the tabs to actually fill in the spaces in another window. Very tedious as there are more than 5 tabs.
For those people that couldn't figure out how to set up on the D-Link like my little cousin (h-a-h-a-h-a), the nice people at D-Link were very helpful and patient with me (Reason for calling is not because of setting up but I had a question about the wireless WEP). For other users that says the representative were not helpful and the wait was long, believe me, I was done talking to the representative in 5 minutes.
How long did it take me to set up and start using the router? For the linksys, it took me 20-40 minutes long. For the D-Link, it took me couple minutes. You won't go wrong. Learn from my mistake and buy the D-Link whether its wireless, LAN, or both.
