Features:
- Forward and Back buttons
Of course
- Built in red laser pointer
Not as bright as a green laser pointer but it does the job
- Built in timer with vibration alert
The device vibrates when you have 5min and 2min left. You can set the timer for any length of time. The easy to read LCD display counts the minutes down.
- F5/ESC and Black Screen Toggle buttons
You don't even have to go back to your laptop to start or stop the presentation, or you can just put up a black screen before or after your presentation.
- Volume control
If you're showing a video with sound or something, you can control the volume without going back to your laptop.
- 2.4GHz USB Dongle slides back into remote for easy storage
I love that the little USB dongle won't get lost! And since the frequency is 2.4GHz, you'll have a clear signal throughout the room with no interference. The range should be less for high frequencies but I haven't found any problem with that so far. (Specs say 50ft range).
- Macintosh compatible!
It doesn't matter what computer you plug it into, it just works! It doesn't require any software of any kind. Truly a plug and play device.
- 6 Month Battery Life
I've had this remote for almost two years now. I haven't had to change the batteries yet and the battery indicator still says full. True, I don't give presentations all that often, but I'm glad the battery doesn't just drain. I've also left the remote on for days at a time on accident, and it didn't drain--so that's a good thing. Also, it takes normal AAA batteries, not some weird watch battery that you have to go to Radio Shack to find.
- Neoprene Carry Case
The remote is packed with a soft sleave so you don't scratch all your stuff up when it's bouncing around in your bag.
Downfall:
- No mouse control
I used another remote that my professor had where you can actually control the mouse pointer from the remote. That was really cool because you could start and stop movies if you wanted, or do something outside of powerpoint without going to the laptop. I couldn't find anything like that would work for both PC and Mac though. Some people just use a wireless mouse as the presentation remote, but I think that looks weird. Logitech actually makes a bluetooth wireless mouse in a slender shape so you can use it as a presentation remote, but it was only PC compatible.
- Not Bluetooth
You still have to use the USB dongle to control the presentation. So don't lose it! It slides right back into the remote when you're done.
Verdict:
I really like my Logitech Presenter Remote. It feels comfortable in my hands. It's not too small, so I can really grip it for some comfort if I get all nervous. It has a great feel to it, with a rubbery no-slip texture. The controls are intuitively placed so you don't have to constantly look down at your hand to control the device. You put your thumb right on the laser pointer button, which is in the middle, and the forward and back buttons are to the right and left, as you'd expect.
The wost thing, is that you have to remember to turn the remote off when you're done. I've forgotten that a bunch of times. The battery doesn't drain down, so I guess I shouldn't worry about it, but still, it feels wrong. I wish it had an automatic shutoff, but I think they designed it without because if it shut off in the middle of your presentation, that would be terrible.
