Almost as good as the book

Many times when a movie is based on a book, it simply doesn't stack up. That is not the case with this film. This was one of my favorite books as a child. I have never seen the other film versions, but I am very impressed with this one. I am one of those people who can watch movies over and over. This one loses nothing with repeat viewings.
Susan Sarandon is perfect in the role of Marmee, the tough but gentle female head of the Marsh clan. Winona Ryder plays the spirited, but emotionally fragile Jo. Clare Danes is the sickly, but caring Beth. They all play their roles to perfection. I never fail to laugh and cry when watching this film. To me, that is the height of achievement for a film. It must stand the test of time. This one does.
I recommend that everyone watch this movie. I have to say it is what would commonly be referred to as a "chick flick", but it is still great. Once you have watched the movie, read the book again or for the first time.
