A Movie to Make a Little Girl Happy
Date of Review: Dec 8, 2000
Ariel, the Little Mermaid has been a regular in our home for years. All three of my girls have adored stories and movies about her, but my youngest at age 7 is particularly enthralled.
A few weeks ago I bought this movie during a shopping trip. My daughter had earned a surprise, and I was more than happy to purchase this movie for her. I like Disney movies anyway, and this was a natural movie to add to our collection.
Since its purchase, this movie has been played at least once a day in our home, and on weekends sometimes even twice or three times. My twelve-year-old daughter also loves it, and has even asked for her own copy for Christmas. I love purchasing videos for holiday gifts, as the children get tons of use and enjoyment out of them and I don't have to worry about having to pick up small parts for months afterward.
The basic plot line of the movie is that Ariel and Prince Eric have gotten married, and had a daughter named Melody. Melody has been blessed with Ariel's curiosity, and ends up as a mermaid under the control of Morgana, the evil sea witch Ursula's sister. The movie is fast paced and full of delightful musical numbers that will stick in your mind long after the movie itself is over. Melody finds herself involved in a wonderful adventure, and even the adults will want to watch this one to the finish to see how it ends.
If you are searching for a gift for a girl aged four to fourteen, consider this movie. I would also recommend that you get the soundtrack itself as a companion gift, because the music is a definite highlight of the movie.
The movie is a recent release, and runs about $16.00 for a copy depending on where you purchase it. While this is a bit higher than I generally like to pay for a movie, the hours of enjoyment that will come from it make it well worth the money. The movie is rated "G", and is suitable for even very young viewers.
I have found this movie to be a wonderful choice for family night viewing. My daughter and I have watched it several times, and the magic has not come close to dissipating. Ariel is a favorite, and her daughter Melody is also a delight.
Add this movie to your holiday shopping list! You won't be disappointed, and neither will the lucky child who receives it from you.
