Product Review

Interesting first generation

by   nimlet ,   Dec 8, 2006

Pros:  Cheap calls without PC on any Wi-Fi network (provided you add Devicescape)

Cons:  Cheap feel. Poor battery life. Occasional glitches

Overall Rating: 3/5 stars

Author's Review

This is Linksys' first attempt at a VoIP handset. It allows you to make cheap calls over Wi-Fi networks using the industry standard SIP, which means you need to sign up and use a SIP provider, such as Gizmo. The phone works well, but has definite signs of a first generation product, with cheap feel, poor usability, and short battery life. Out of the box it can't be used elsewhere but your home, although a company called Devicescape makes replacement firmware that allows calls at any hotspot location. Pretty cool. Not a bad 1st attempt but it's a great sign of things to come.
