My Motorola Surfboard modem died the other day after less than 2 years of service, so it was time to go out and buy another one, because I refuse to rent a modem from an ISP when in about 7-8 months you have paid for one (my ISP charges 5 bucks a month for renting). Anyway, because I was disappointed with the short length of service from the Motorola, I decided to look at other manufacturers. And since I love Linksys products, I decided to give their modem a try, despite warnings on Epinions.com and other review sites about how people did not like it for slow performance and overheating when stacked with other Linksys products. But since it had a 30 return policy, I figured I would give it a shot, and if the other reviews were true, I would return it.
I have had it now for a week, and I have never noticed any slower response time than my previous Motorola modem, or had any problems with it overheating, despite being stacked on my Linksys wireless router. Is there extra heat emitting from the units? Yes, there seems to be, but it is not warm to the touch, and I got a recommendation to stack the modem on top of the router. And in tests this week for download speed, I have been averaging 5.5 Mbps, maxing out at 6 Mbps.
I feel internet speed has allot more to do with your area and your ISP rather than the modem you have, but this modem pleases me so far. And as for the overheating problems that some have written about, I talked with a rep at Linksys who said that while they may get warm, it will not damage either unit, and if something happened, that the 1 year warranty on the modem (3 years on the router) would cover the damages.
So anyway, while many have not had success with this modem, I have. And now you have some more opinions on this device, good luck with your decision!
