Product Review

The best ultra thin notebook

by   dkla2001 ,   Dec 14, 2008

Pros:  Amazing computer. Flash Drive. Great Keyboard. Reliable, DVD/CD capable.

Cons:  Windows Vista, Price

The Bottom Line:  UGLY. UGLY. UGLY.Best ultra light computer in the market.Even a Mac lover like me must admit. This one's a keeper. Better than the Macbook Air.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I love Macs and would prefer buying one over a PC if possible but the Macbook Air is just no competition to the Lenovo X300.

My dad needed an ultra portable computer for travel and I helped him with the research. It's Pretty unanimous in all websites that are not affiliated that Lenovo has totally hit a home run with this machine.

It has a replaceable battery which the Mac doesn't. Meaning for business travel you can pack more than one battery. It also lasts way longer than the MAC AIR. The X300 also has an SSD (solid state Drive) hard drive which is more reliable with more memory 64 Gb. As the SSD drive has no moving parts it will last many more years than a regular hard drive that usually dies after 2-3 years. So for business travel where there's a lot of moving around it's ideal.
It has a DVD burner. So you can see movies, read and write DVD/CD which for many is a necessity especially if you'd like to sometimes burn things and give them to clients.
The Macbook AIR's main advantage is that while it lacks features to truly compete with Lenovo it's much more trendy and as a fashion statement is way cooler to come with to any Starbucks for random online roaming. It's beautiful slimmer has the MAC OS which many people including myself love. But it's not practical for real work during travel. It's more suited as an expensive NETBOOK for reading emails and maybe working on documents which can later be emailed or just saved on Google docs. But that's about it.Yet for the price of one MAC AIR one can buy 5 full netbooks from many other companies. So for the price it's just not worth it.The Lenovo on the other hand is a real computer for real computing just shrunk into a slimmer box thanks to a lot of Research and Development done by Lenovo.

For all those worried a few years ago that once IBM hands over the reigns of it's PC line to Lenovo not just for manufacturing but also for it's research and devlopement department of new computers  and it'll eventually turn the father of all PC's into just another generic non exciting computer- the X300 and the X301 are the definitive answer - Lenovo continues coming out with ugly but amazing computers that just blow the competition out of the water.
Also, unlike the Mac Air's keyboard which are not easy to type on, the Lenovo has the same IBM style keyboards that are practical and easy to use for extensive use. Many would even argue they're the best laptop keyboards ever made.
The computer has a few major flaws:
1. VISTA...My dad decided he hates it and moved back to XP...
2. PRICE.The price is still high for this device. Maybe even overpriced.
3. The SSD still has limited space so for some applications and for heavy users it might not be enough storage space.
If you don't need to travel a lot and weight is not truly an issue then perhaps either wait buying this computer or buy a regular MACBOOK or a heavier and cheaper Lenovo.
Lenovo's have continued the IBM tradition of making reliable computers that are ugly , not flashy very corporate very unhip but are also very reliable.

My dad loves his computer.I hate companies that make ugly devices like the Lenovo X300.I don't think people should buy ugly products. After so many years- couldn't they make their product line just a little bit sexier?

But in this case, I can't say anything but if you can BUY IT. This is both by professional reviewers and by my experience the best ultra compact laptop PC. The SSD drive will guarantee you'll have many many years to enjoy it.
