Could Have Been My Dream

by   crackwitz ,   Apr 17, 2008

Pros:  high-resolution screen battery life

Cons:  Bad engineering assembly mistakes

The Bottom Line:  Good product, as long as you never ever depend on it.

Overall Rating: 2/5 stars

Author's Review

I bought mine in september 2007. I chose Lenovo and this model because of the high-res tablet screen (I'm a CS student and programmer at heart) and the battery life (4 hours of regular use, 5-6 if I can do without WiFi). I was happy at first, but days after I got it, issues kept coming up. I'll just list them.

The HDD blind feels flimsy, leaves gaps.

Instead of the specified 1 GB of flash cache, mine somehow has just half of that (512 MB).

The WiFi switch must be operated just so that it doesn't catch on an unfortunate edge inside the case, if I want to switch it to "ON".

The lock on the lid comes open when I carry my tablet around in a backpack, i.e., after maybe 15 minutes of walking, the screen opens in the backpack.

When it's running (and opened), and I hold it up (and keep it horizontally) by one corner, it makes crackling sounds. That only happens when it's turned on, so it must be electrical in nature. Is the chassis made of plastic? Are the wires and circuit boards not mounted to not get affected by that? It's a _luggable_ computer, not a desktop.

Oh, audio chip died maybe a week after I got it. No original Vista or the diagnostics partition, no cleanly installed XP, no linux live CDs, could make it work. The system still reports audio hardware, but any program trying to use it complains about it not working.

Finally, The Bezel Issue.

You should have heard of that one. It goes like this: you put the device in tablet mode (flip screen, have the lock catch). The issue is that the bezel part closest to the hinge produces a gap to the screen surface. Apparently the bezel is GLUED to the screen and engineers at Lenovo hoped that the glue would be strong enough to transfer forces from the hinge into the screen. Through that gap (combined with the lock opening in my backpack) comes dust and dirt that wanders around in the screen, maybe attaching to the screen just so that I see it all the time on the screen. There are now splotches of dirt (I assume glue from the bezel) on my screen that I can't wipe away. I won't try disassembling this thing in fear that this'd void my warranty and I'd be left with an expensive brick of cardboard.

Have a look:

Also, the rightmost screen backlight must be broken because it's _always_ darker than the others, and I don't like how colors/brightness of the actual screen contents is adjusted when I lower the backlight intensity (this is something I expect maybe 5 others on the world to be able to articulate, though it's plainly visible to anyone).

I would be shrugging it all off as a production hiccup if they made any indication of being willing to send me a replacement unit BEFORE I'd have to let go of my current unit. This is my only computer right now, and I need it every day. I just CAN'T give it away for 2-8 weeks of repair. Several other customers did send their units in for repair, but some even then reported the issue unfixed.

Their fix consists of applying stronger glue. I don't mean to judge this, because I have no engineering degree to back it up, but isn't it obvious that they just miscalculated the forces on the hinge? More glue will only shift the failure to the next weakest part, which could very well be the screen panel itself.
