Author's Review
I love my x61 tablet. It seems well built and well thought out. I was concerned that the high resolution screen in a small form factor would make things hard to read, but I find the increased resolution helps make up for the smaller screen. I can leave home with the battery fully charged and use it for more than four hours of use throughout the day with no problems. The keyboard is very comfortable. The tablet works very well in all the MS Office products.
Screen Driver Issues - Resolved
When I first wrote this review, I had concerns about the intel graphics drivers and issues. Switching between extended desktop and native display only was awkward. Over time, there have been improvements in the drivers and these issues are now resolved.
Pen Calibration Settings
You can orient the x61 screen any way you'd like. However, if you tend to write with your pen on an angle (as most people do), you'll probably want to recalibrate the tablet each time you change orientation. I wish the machine just held a separate calibration settings for each different orientation or did a better job of mirroring the calibration settings from one orientation to the next.
Support
I've now owned this computer for about 15 months. In that time, I've had two hardware problems. The first problem concerned the bezel of plastic surrounding the screen. On my machine, it cracked in the corners and around the fingerprint reader. This was a common complaint with this model at the time, but I think it has been resolved and new machines would be less likely to have the problem. The second hardware failure was a simple harddrive failure. For both problems, Lenovo provided excellent and speedy support.
Conclusion
Despite the issues I've mentioned above, the x61 is the best computer I've ever owned. I love the tablet interface, the speed, the battery power, the docking system, the large number of ports, the sound quality, the construction, etc. I can't really imagine switching back to a pen-less computer again, and I am quite certain that my next one will be another Lenovo.
