31 and not married? Good gravy!
Date of Review: Mar 19, 2006
The Bottom Line: Though it may not be as good as some other films we've seen, it's still one to look into. And Zaza looks good in that vibrant yellow...
Film class movie #8. We skipped Mexico and went straight into Israel. I m still not exactly sure why, but oh well.
What s Goin On:
Zaza (Lior Ashkenazi) is 31, still a student in a university (getting his advanced degree), and unmarried. This makes his family rather unhappy, so of course they ve been going about showing him girls, hoping he ll latch on to one of them and follow the typical social path. Of course, Zaza isn t too thrilled with this.
Zaza is instead visiting (quite often) the home of Judith (Ronit Elkabetz), a single mother who isn t the type Zaza s family would be fond of. After another presentation of an 18-year-old girl, Zaza heads off to Judith s house, accidentally taking his parent s house keys with him. His out-all-night mystery activity spurs them into an investigation and the discovery of Judith and the results are not pretty.
What Did I Think?
Zaza is hot. Just so you know, I don t say that about most actors (especially Hollywood ones I have a very particular attraction), so that means Lior Ashenazi is a good-looking guy. That said, he portrays the bored, indifferent Zaza very well, who only seems to wake up when he s with Judith. It s easy to feel for Judith and even easier to hate Zaza s family. They re downright scary.
The movie is actually pretty short, running only 1 hour and 40 minutes, though it seems to drag at some scenes. A lot of uncomfortable scenes occur as well, or at least awkward silences, such as when Zaza s family goes to meet the family of a potential bride. This is also another movie I wouldn t exactly file under the genre of comedy. It wasn t particularly funny, but maybe it is if you live in Israel. I guess I can t really say for sure. There are some chuckle-eliciting scenes, but for the most part you re busy thinking Geez Zaza s family sucks.
A bit of warning there is a long scene of Zaza and Judith having intercourse (on and off) so if that sort of thing makes you uncomfortable, now you know oh, and I don t recommend this for the kiddies, they wouldn t get it anyway.
Will you like the ending? Well, it s hard to say. I think that depends on what kind of person you are. Personally, I was a little confused and left wondering about Zaza s true feelings about a lot of things, so I wasn t totally satisfied. Still, it s a good comment on cultural traditions and the problems they pose.
Best parts of the movie? Lior s hotness and Zaza s doggy. Awww, cute!
