Product Review

I agree - the heater is too noisy

by   peterdams ,   Dec 15, 2005

Pros:  Heats well; low-profile

Cons:  Annoying sounds when warming up/cooling off; no indicator light showing heat is on

The Bottom Line:  I would not buy the heater because of the noise and lack of a heat-on indicator light.

Overall Rating: 1/5 stars

Author's Review

I bought the heater for its low profile and didn't think the noise described in the other review would bother me. But after a few days it did.

The noise occurs when the heater comes on and shuts off. It is not a continuous sound, but more the sound you hear when you turn off a car and the exhaust shields contract (the "pinging" sound). The heater has metal fins radiating off the oil-filled tube, and they make the sound when the tube expands (heat on) and contracts (heat off).

It's OK when there's lots of noise in the room, but I used it for my study and it became annoying after a while. I think I would not like it in my bedroom, either.

Another thing that I did not like was that there was no indicator light to show the unit was heating. An orange glow light is on all the time to show that it is plugged in.

It heats well.

I exchanged it in the same store I bought it at. I am now using a "Marvin Wall Heat High-Profile" electric heater. Absolutely no sound, indicator lights, and a small fan with extra switch for quick warm-up. It is only 16" tall and still fits under my 20" window sill.
