Author's Review
I spent a fair amount of time researching our first front loader before I purchased. Much of that research was on line so I want to pass on what I discovered and what I ended up with now that we've made the choice.
First off, if this is your first front loader, here's what I learned. Most complaints reviewers have with front loading machines are new owners who didn't read the manual and tried to use the machine as a top loader, including soap and cleaning products. They flat out will not work in a front loader and can damage your machine. The 2nd biggest complaint I found was that it takes more time to do a load than the old top loader. This is not totally true and the user has much control over how much time is spent for the load. Add a prewash, extra rise, etc. and it's going to take more time. Lastly, don't go cheap. Spend as much as you can possibly afford, there is a difference in quality and as a brand, LG gets the highest overall consumer marks.
We've gone from 5 loads a week in a top loader to 3 loads a week in our front loader. The time it takes to actually do the laundry is the same, as in if we used to start at 10am it would all be done by 4pm or so. It's the same time with the front loader, however, we're handling 2 loads less which means during that time block we're free to do other things. This machine is very quiet and does a great job washing clothes. We've even put our queen size comforter in there! It's amazing how much clothing can be washed at one time and with so little detergent.
