Product Review

Buyer beware

by   talon86 ,   Apr 28, 2008

Pros:  Looks nice.

Cons:  Ice maker replaced 5 times. Refrigerator replaced 3 times. LG makes horrible ice makers.

The Bottom Line:  Do not buy this unit unless you do not care about the ice maker. The refrigerator and freezer have worked fine but the ice makers are problematic.

Overall Rating: 1/5 stars

Author's Review

We built a new home in 2005 and purchased a side by side LG refrigerator and dishwasher from Home Depot. Within a month the refrigerator was no longer making ice and having trouble cooling. After numerous trips to Home Depot, I convinced them to replace the unit. Six months later the ice maker failed again. LG (after 6 phone calls) found a repairman in our area and had him replace the control board and ice maker. This ice maker lasted less than 3 months.

I contacted LG again. If took 5 phone calls and finally they replaced the ice maker again. It lasted a while and failed again.

It took 10+ phone calls and escalation to convince them I had a defective unit. This time LG replaced the refrigerator with a different model and different ice maker.

I have now owned three LG Side by Sides in the past 3 years. One of the units had the ice maker replaced two times.

These units will not make ice. They fail within 9 months to a year. One unit failed within 1 month of installation.

LG service at times was very helpful but for the most part was unresponsive. It took many phone calls and determined calling to get them to replace an obviously defective unit. I left numerous unanswered messages. I was told numerous times that a manager would return my call but was never called back. LG has had a very difficult time getting anyone to handle repairs in our area because of there treatment of the repair techs. They are not reimbursing the techs for their warranty work and parts.

I am now on my third refrigerator and fifth ice maker. It has once again failed. The warranty based on when the unit was first purchased has now expired so any repairs will be my responsibility. I will not spend one cent repairing this unit.

Do not buy an LG appliance. They look nice but the quality is terrible. By the way, we have also replaced an LG $1000 dishwasher due to a failed heating element.

Three whirlpool appliances (Double oven, cook-top and microwave) are going strong with no issues. In the past, I have owned a Whirlpool, Frigidaire, and Kenmore side by side with ice makers. All have worked fine with no repair service needed.
