Author's Review
We recently purchased a set of new LG TROMM washer/dryer. We decided to stack them since we have a very small laundry room and our washer has to be on the right side. The washer door is in the way of getting clothes in the dryer and not reversible. I am home with a new baby and have done a ton of laundry since we had this delivered. I have tried different settings and played around with the options.
The Product
Our LG is white, but it is available in blue, black, and red at an additional cost. It looks very cool lit up - especially at night. There is a dial that will change for different loads. There are several different loads available. You can manually adjust the amount of time that it will dry.
It comes with a drying rack that is easy to place for items that you would not want to tumble. The lint screen is easy to access. The door can be changed to either side to help fit in different laundry rooms. There is a specific setting for rack dry. The drum does not spin when this is activated.
There is a monitor on the dryer that gives you an estimated time left. It also has a bar that tells you the percentage of time that is complete. It is easy to read. Ours is stacked and I have trouble seeing it in the dark- unless the overhead light is on - but I am only 5' so it is a little high for me and the screen does not tilt. I do not have trouble getting the clothes out or reaching controls. I have a little trouble adjusting the temperature times, only because I am short and haven't memorized where the controls are yet. I have a hard time reading the buttons since I am on the shorter side.
Language
You can choose English, Spanish, or French for the language listed on your monitor.
Sensor Dry Cycles available include:
Descriptions from the manual. The sensor is supposed to detect the moisture in the load and automatically adjust the drying time. The temperature and time is based on the cycle selected.
Heavy Duty - jeans and corduroys
Cotton/Towels - denims, towels
Normal - casual clothes
Permanent press - self explanatory
Delicates - synthetics, knit, and no- iron finishes
Ultra delicates - workout wear, shear, and lace
These cycle times range from 32 - 54 minutes and I have found them to be fairly accurate although I set mine for longer because the clothes tend to be damp at these settings.
There are manual dry cycles which have a specific drying time and temperature. These include:
Speed Dry for small loads.
Freshen Up to remove wrinkles from clothes.
Air Dry for drying without heat like rubber and plastic.
A silver button to the left of the monitor allows you to increase the amount of time. The silver button on the right side of the monitor decreases the amount of time.
There is a child lock that will lock all the buttons unless you hold the button that enables it for 3 seconds.
Options
For each cycle you can change the amount of time, temperature level, and dryness sensor. Temperature time ranges in 10 minute increments from 20 - 60 minutes. Temperature has 5 levels as does the dryness intensity control.
Custom Program
There is an option to select a cycle, then change the temp, time, and drying level to customize the a cycle to your favorite settings. This can be saved so your preferences will be made at the touch of a button! Very cool since I would otherwise have to change the dryness level and/or time for each load.
Wrinkle Care
With this option, the drum will tumble off and on for up to 3 hours after the cycle is done to prevent wrinkles from setting in. This is nice when you forget the laundry!
Anti Bacterial
This option is a very hot temperature to kill bacteria. It can only be used with heavy duty, cotton/towels, and normal cycles. This will be handy this winter when cold/flu/and stomach viruses make a visit! Especially with small kids, it will be nice to really get rid of bacteria in their sheets.
Damp Dry Beep
A beep will sound when the load is around 80% dry. LG says that this is so you can remove items that dry more quickly, or those that you want to iron.
Our Experience
I have found the operation is quieter than our previous dryer (although buttons and things hitting the sides continue to be noisy). I believe part of our satisfaction is because the washer washes the clothes more gently and they come out drier than with our previous washer. I have noticed that the clothes are damp, but when we increase the time we don't have a problem and it is still shorter than our old dryer. There is an anti-wrinkle feature that will intermittently spin the clothes to prevent wrinkles. This works well. The buzzer has about 4 different volume levels. It is a pleasant sound, and not obnoxious. My 7 week old sleeps right through. It plays a few notes when you power the dryer on too. You can pause the dryer if you need to add or remove items.
We have noticed a significant decrease in lint. Each time you power the dryer on a message on the monitor reminds you to clean the lint filter.
You can purchase a remote monitor to place in another area of the house to tell you how much time is left on the washer and dryer. This is a neat idea since it is so quiet, I really don't hear it when I am downstairs. Out of sight, out of mind, and I get behind on laundry! We just received it and my husband has yet to do laundry (amazing his is even doing laundry but that is a different story) without it. It makes pleasant sounds when it registers a cycle (washer or dryer), when someone changes anything during the setting and at the end. It tells you the time remaining as well. It works through the electrical system of the house and just needs to be plugged in.
We enjoy the looks and function of this dryer. My only complaint is their idea of normal dry. I admit that is a very minor complaint - especially since I can change this easily and have a custom load. It is very easy to use and clean. We are pleased with this purchase and I am impressed that a washer and dryer has motivated my husband to do laundry more often!
