Product Review

A good basic machine for the price

by   martinsamson ,   Mar 16, 2007

Pros:  good value for money SOHO machine with good quality text and colour output

Cons:  A little noisy, fairly slow colour, envelope printing a real hassle.

The Bottom Line:  Good value for money basic colour laser suitable for not to demanding home or small office user

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Machine comes with all consumables fitted - remove a few tapes and a couple of strings and you are up and running. Software easy to install, even though mine ended up in Spanish first time around! Uninstall and reinstall and all up and running in less than 30 minutes

Fairly small footprint will fit on most desk tops. Basic machine, one open tray for 200 sheets of paper, lights for ready, error and toner state.

Controlled through software on PC but little overhead and you can continue to work whilst it is printing in the background.(1 GB RAM fitted with Pentium IV 2.8GHZ processor)

Machine rather noisy and clunky on start up. Text pages print out smooth and fast with clear text even on small fonts - perhaps a little stark compared with my Dell b/w laser.

Mixed colour/text flyers clear and bright even on supermarket's own plain paper. Colour photos on plain paper suprisingly good for price with little banding or polarisation noted on A4.

Machine is fairly slow when printing colour - three to four pages per minute with definite pause between pages and rather a lot of whirring and clunking noises.

No by-pass slot so printing envelopes is a real hassle. First you have to remove paper and install envelopes - no guide markings for this. The you have to set up in software and then open the top of the printer and adjust two pressure levers - it can be hot in there watch your fingers - to resume normal printing you have to reset pressure levers and reinstall paper in tray - easier to use a Mark 1 Biro.

For the price this is quite an impressive machine with good quality ouput. Ideal for home/small office users but if you want long runs of colour then you will need to look elsewhere

Only gripe is the great consumables rip off - comes with 1,500 page consumables fitted. Set of 4,500 page consumables will set you back about £250 - more than the machine.

Fuser drum needs to be replaced after about 35,00 black and white or 11,00 colour pages at about £110 (how can machine have a duty cycle of 35,00 pages per month!). It might be cheaper to replace the machine.
