Author's Review
In this review, I'm not going to reiterate all the great information already provided by "Gamerjet" regarding the details of the various modes, challenges, gimmicks, hand motions, etc. For that, just read his review.
I've never played any of the previous versions of this game, in fact, before buying the Wii console a few months ago, I didn't play ANY games. Bought the console mainly to entertain our grandbabies, but my husband and I have found we are getting far more use from it ourselves.
So I don't know what the previous versions of this game were like, but although it is true that some of the recordings of the songs may not be the best as they are not covered by the original artists, almost all are familiar American Pop songs, spanning a number of decades. Why is this important? Because it's easier to learn the steps when dancing to music you already know, more fun too!
As a result, we found it fairly easy to pick up the steps to disco classics such as "Burn, baby, Burn (Disco Inferno)", and "Hot Stuff", At first I didn't particularly care for the way in which the tempo was greatly increased for certain songs such as "Karma Cameleon" and Hinder's "Lips of an Angel," but I'm getting used to it, and learning these steps as well--although it has been more difficult.
There is a certain "learning curve" to this game. Some of the steps to the songs in the "beginner's mode" are ridiculously easy, becoming progressively more difficult as you work through the next 2 levels, basic and difficult. The expert level is pure insanity. When first learning, I'd recommend turning off the hand controls and "gimmicks". Just getting the steps right on the foot controller is challenging enough!
So why should you buy this game? It's a great aerobic workout! A challenging and highly enjoyable one at that! Intense eye/hand/foot coordination, it will "make you sweat" while enjoying the music and screen graphics.
Negatives:
1. 50 songs is not enough! I understand that additional downloadable "song packs" are available for this game for other consoles, but not the Wii version, at least, not yet.
2. The dance choreography leaves a lot to be desired--some of the steps just don't seem to make a whole lot of sense! They could have done a much better job of making the steps "flow with the rhythm." This may just be part of the "learning curve" I'm still experiencing, or it may also be an intentional part of the overall challenge of the game.
3. Bare feet are recommended, but I found that makes the controller pad sticky, and stocking feet are too slippery. I've found a light weight aerobic shoe works best.
4. Graphics are very colorful, but redundant. Could use more variety.
5. The game doesn't save the "options" selected, and they need to be reselected every time the game is restarted.
