Not a good buy
Date of Review: Dec 19, 2006
The Bottom Line: Spend on the newer photo inkjets that are dropping in price.
I got a Kodak Series 3 printer to go along with my Kodak DX7590. I am happy with the camera so I thought the printer would be a no brainer.
At first it worked Flawlessly. I could print and print and it would bring out awesome quality photos. The color was good; the crispness was good, etc. I also liked the fact that the photos were instantly waterproof (thru a laminating step that the photos go thru)
My problems came about 5-6 months after the initial purchase. The product is fairly inexpensive but the refills for the paper and ink are not as much. A single refill is $17.00
While a value pack is $39.00. I recommend the value pack (Ph-160) since you get 4 cartridges and 160 sheets of paper. Also with these refills you have to buy them as a pack. Which is just as well as Kodak has engineered the ink to run out just about the same time as the paper. To make matters worse. You will really go thru many packets of ink and paper if you are printing a high volume. I went thru a pack just doing a series of photos for work.
Another thing that I started to notice was that the paper would jam without warning. It would be doing fine printing some photos then it would be jammed in mid print. I also starting having a problem with the printer's feeder which stopped working as well. As of now the printer feeder is working 10% of the time. I have to guide it thru with my thumbnail. Which is great as the oils on your hands have adverse reaction to the printing
Process. The configuration that the printer has also seems to attract pet hair. (I assume because of static electricity) Nothing is better than printing a great photo and getting a red line because of a stray cat hair.
So in closing, I guess I should be wary of anything that has a dual purpose because something will have to be compromised for that dual purpose. Although I've had no problems with the charging portion of this printer. The actual printing is fraught with problems.
