Nice for the Price

Date of Review: Mar 24, 2008

The Bottom Line:  It is 200 bucks. What do you expect. When is cost $50 to fill your truck up. It's worth at least that much I feel.
I’ve had this camera now for about a month. I originally bought the camera because of its low price. I was simply looking for a camera with A high mega-pixel rating and A low price. My needs were simply a good camera to take some pictures to put my items on EBay.
However, when I took the camera out of the box. I was pleasantly surprised. First off, the camera is 12 mega-pixels. Now compare to my older 4 mega-pixel camera this camera took nice high quality photos. I read some reviews about people having trouble transferring the photos to their computer. Now I do not use the USB ports on the camera to transfer my photos. I merely that the media card into my computer’s card reader. It’s a really simple process, and works flawlessly.
Now secondly, the video. This camera takes better quality
video than my dad’s camcorder. Plus it is high definition. You can select what definition to take your videos in. If you do not desire A high definition quality video then you can record almost double the time on one memory card that you could record high definition. Don’t be concerned though. The 2 GB card I bought at Wal-Mart will record 29 minutes of high definition or 59 minutes of standard definition. Or you could on the same memory card, instead of video, records still pictures. On a separate menu you select what mega-pixel you want to take the pictures in. On A12 mega-pixel setting you can record 554 pictures on a 2 GB card. Or if you drop that rating down to 3.1 mega-pixels, the images you can store on your 2 GB card is 1743. I think the one card will probably do for me for any occasion.
Now, regrettably, this camera does have a few flaws in it. First off, and most importantly to me was the Autofocus. Sometimes it has trouble deciding on what to lock onto for the focus. It will focus on one object, then another beside of it. This game goes on and on and never stops. I especially had trouble photographing on A RED background. I’m not really sure why because the item that I was photographing was the only item in the viewfinder. When I took the red background away the picture was taken without any problem.
Another bad point would be the shotty construction. I can tell from looking at it and feeling it that if I ever drop it, even a short distance of A couple of inches. This camera will be out of commission. O well, this is a camera not a bowling ball. I will have to use kid gloves I suppose.
That is enough about bad things on this camera. I think I have touched on all of them anyway. Another really nice feature I found this camera to have is the simplicity of its menus. Reading the Manual was actually not even needed. Only when I was making sure that I was not missing any of the features. The menus are really how A person would say “Idiot proof”. Even my mom, who is not good with electronics at all, can use is calmer without any help. The menus pretty well explain themselves. Kudos for Kodak.
Just remember the good things that you are getting for the price that you’re paying. After doing so, it is easy to overlook the flaws in this camera. Sure, another company will offer a camera that is a lot better. But it will cost far more. I mean FAR more.
I feel that I got more than my money’s worth. It’s more than the camera that I sought out to buy. So Kodak has a happy customer here.

UPDATE**
I've had this camera now for a couple months and I must say. I like it even more than I did at first. I've since learned how to use the other features that I was not originally concerned with and this camera now is even a better deal. This deal is well worth your time to try it out if your goal is not to spend too much but still want some good merchandise.

The camera has an anti shake mode that will let you take pictures without holding perfectly still, but still have excellent quality.  Really helpful when in a public scenario; as standing like a tripod is not always an option before the moment is gone.  NOW THE BAD PART.  This feature will not let you use the macro mode along with it.  You might be thinking "so what".  But with a 12 megapixel camera, "macro" is 2-3 feet away or closer.  That’s where pictures of inanimate things usually are.  Bad move Kodak.  This one flaw will send me to another camera when technology increases, but this was still a nice priced stepping stone.

Recommended to buy: Yes

Pros
The lens cap. It open automatacally when the power is turned on. And closes likewise.
Cons
Autofocus lock is shotty.  The thumb-pad for navigating the menus is not for big hands.
