Lively and great filling sound
Date of Review: Feb 11, 2002
The Bottom Line: Good speaker, but a little weak for my application of it. However when installed with similar other speakers, sounded much better!
I first bought this to complement the SF-1's and SC-1 i had in my home theatre, as the store did not have the SS-1 in stock, so they weren't up to par power-wise with my front and centre speakers. Running at a nominal 50 watts as opposed to the 100 watts my other speakers could produce, along with a much lower efficiency rating (90db as opposed to 94db and 95db) they didn't quite create the big sound i needed to compliment my other klipsch speakers.
I've now replaced them, and the larger ones sound much better.
But even tho they didn't quite compare to the SS-1's, I did install the SS.5's in my friends system who is running the other 50watt series of klipsch speakers with similar efficiency and it seems to sound a lot better than in mine. Perhaps i didn't have the speakers set properly?
I had fine tuned the db and did test tones, and they appeared to match, but i was finding a severe lack of surround sound from them. I did find that they blended the sound from the sides and behind quite well tho.. transitions when a plane flew over were very natural, albeit a little softened and slightly less "full".
The dispersion placement of the tweeters and woofer are quite condusive to the surround sound, and offer much better fill than the SB-1's that i had previously to create that movie theatre experience!
I would recommend these rear speakers, but if you are running fairly powerful front speakers i would move up a notch to the SS-1's.
I even tried these speakers with the Mission M74's, and with good results. They actually sounded a little bit better with the mission speakers, as i was replaying the Stargate fight scenes with the flying spaceships shooting at the people. Swooping overhead ships sounded more even with the missions.
Now with the SS-1's, and the SF-1's, my system sounds much more full and lively!
