Author's Review
Sometimes when I walk past my kitchen counter I still can't believe that it is sitting there. For over fifteen years now I have been wanting one ... but somehow the investment for this product was always put on the back burner. And then it happened ... just this past Christmas.
As we were traveling for the holidays my husband and I decided to exchange gifts early, rather than toting them with us. No wonder he suggested this .... because, sitting underneath our Christmas tree, was a big, heavy box with my name on it. And upon opening it, there shining back brightly at me was my very own white KitchenAid 4 1/2 Quart mixer. And I couldn't wait to test it out!! But ... the story doesn't end here ... a few days later while celebrating Christmas with my parent's I noticed the same size (and weight) box sitting under the tree. No ... it couldn't be. My mother has known how much I've always wanted one, but she wouldn't, would she? In answer to that question, yes, yes she did. So ... after waiting fifteen years I now not only had one, but I was the proud owner of two KitchenAid 4 1/2 Quart mixers.
The KitchenAid 4 1/2 Quart stand mixer (model KSM90PS) is a delight to own. Over the years I have used a hand held mixer and while it did the job for me, I knew that there was an easier way. I enjoy to bake during the cooler weather, including making lots of cookies during the holiday season. The best feature for me with this mixer is that I no longer have to shut off the beaters to add another ingredient. Once the bowl is clamped onto the base of the mixer, the beaters come move continuously, allowing me to add ingredient after ingredient. What a pleasure this is! This cuts my preparation time nearly in half.

Assembly ~
Assembling the KitchenAid 4 1/2 Quart Mixer was quick and easy. In fact, the hardest part was getting the mixer out of the box, mostly due to the weight of this mixer. Enclosed in the box is a very useful and easy to read instructional booklet, with recipes included. After reading the directions ... I had my mixer set up and ready to go in no time at all.
Attachments ~
The flat beater ~ This actually is currently the only beater I have used so far. It is to be used with normal to heavy mixtures, including some of the following: cakes, cookies, mashed potatoes (my kids personal favorite!), quick breads and more ...
The wire whip ~ The instructional booklet states that this is best used for any mixtures that need air incorporated, such as: eggs, egg whites, heavy cream, angel food cakes, and more ...
The dough hook ~ This is best used when mixing and kneading for doughs.
The pouring shield ~ Although I confess that this is a good idea, I have found this to be a hindrance when trying to stir the sides of the bowl with a spatula in between ingredients.
Care And Cleaning ~
This is another reason why I love this product. Clean up is easy! The bowl, flat beater and dough hook may be washed in the dishwasher. The wire whip should be hand washed and dried immediately. Honestly, I have always hand washed the bowl and attachments and immediately dried them. We have a problem with hard water and this eliminates the majority of the spots.
Additional Attachments ~ that can be purchased separately
Food Grinder, Fruit/Vegetable Strainer, Food Tray, Sausage Stuffer, Rotor Slicer/Shredder, Disc Slicer/Shredder, Grain Mill, Can Opener, Citrus Juicer, Pasta Maker, Water Jacket, Bowl Covers and Mixer Covers. As you can see ~ there are many uses to this great product.
I highly recommend this product to anyone, especially to one who enjoys baking. And, just in case you are wondering .... No, I don't have two mixers currently sitting on my counter. I ended up returning one back to the store and then purchased a few other exciting kitchen appliances. :)
