KitchenAid KHM5AP 5-Speed Handmixer
Date of Review: Apr 29, 2008
The Bottom Line: Great, affordable, little lightweight mixer.
*** As with all my reviews, this is a Cruelty Free product from a maker that does NOT use animal testing.***
I recently found a healthy Squash Bread recipe the whole family enjoys. Since it's near impossible to get one of our boys to eat veggies, I make this quite frequently.
Ideally, we would have bought a KitchenAid stand mixer. My sister-in-law has had one for years that she loves. Since I'm not that much of a baker I don't think the cost would be worthwhile for us. Not to mention we have very little counter and cabinet space.
QVC had the KitchenAid KHM5AP 5-Speed Handmixer featured on one of their kitchen shows. This mixer not only includes the standard beaters, but also two dough hooks. At under 50 dollars, and with the QVC easy return policy I gave it a shot.
What you get
The KitchenAid KHM5AP 5-Speed Handmixer weighs only 2.3 pounds. It is available in White, Red and Black. QVC also offers it in Cobalt Blue – this may or may not be an exclusive. Provided with the mixer are two self-cleaning stainless steel turbo beaters, two dough hooks, and one liquid blend rod.
Additional features include:
- 5 speeds
- Sliding Speed Control Switch
- Oversized Beater Ejector Button
- Protected Air Vents
- Non-tip rest
- 1-year Limited Manufacturer's Warranty
How it works; or doesn't
When reading my review, please note I'm not much of a baker. I don't whip my own cream or make meringues. The KitchenAid KHM5AP 5-Speed Handmixer surly can do these things. But I couldn't tell you how well.
Being so lightweight, I find the KitchenAid KHM5AP 5-Speed Handmixer pretty impressive. Holding it in one hand and operating the speed switch with that same hand's thumb is very easy. For such a small gadget, the power is comparable to larger handhelds.
The design of the Turbo Beaters is nice. They are rounded Stainless Steel wires. I can't necessarily say this improves the beating process. But it certainly makes cleaning easier than the older models I've had with the flatter surfaces.
The dough hooks are probably best suited for cookie and pastry dough. Of course, I tried it for a bread dough. Actually, they did a fair job. But since it's not like a large stand mixer, and they're not as large as a bread hook (the C-shaped dough hooks) I wouldn't recommend using it for bread.
The liquid blend rod seems useless. I tried making a smoothie in a glass using fresh fruit. It did nothing. The soft plastic beater is too soft to mash anything. It must truly be for blending liquids. But unless I already have the mixer out, why bother? I'll just use a whisk or spoon instead.
Inserting and removing the accessories is very easy. The just click in and eject with the large button. The accessories are all dishwasher safe, and the mixer wipes clean very easily. The smaller size also makes for easy storage.
Final Thoughts
The KitchenAid KHM5AP 5-Speed Handmixer is more than sufficient for my needs. For a small, lightweight mixer, it packs a heavy punch.
