Author's Review
Kirby is one of the coolest and cutest video game mascots out there. Kirby debuted on game boy in the game Kirbys Dreamland and followed up with 4 traditional squeals Kirby Dreamland 2, 3, Superstar and Kirby 64. Kirby also had other squeals that were less than traditional but had a lot of spunk. Kirbys Avalanche [Super NES] was a puzzle game based off the Puyo Puyo engine and it was both fun and additive. Kirbys Pinball was a unique and fun pinball game for the game boy. Kirbys Dream Course is a mini-golf like game, also for Super Nes, and was and still is one of the best golf-based game out there. Kirby Star Stacker eventually found its way on the game boy with Tetris-like elements, but with some new-found tweaks [Super Nes version was released in Japan]. And now here is Kirby Tilt N Tumble, a game based off a cool and innovative control system that will keep you hooked to you game boy color [or advance].
Gameplay- Kirby Tilt N Tumble plays very differently than any other game you have ever played. The way the game plays is that you have to guide our little pinkish friend, Kirby, through top-viewed mazes while trying to gain points and other things in various ways. By collecting 50 yellow star pieces you get an extra life, by collecting all of the blue stars pieces in a round and making to the end of the level without losing a life you gain a life, and by collecting all of red stars pieces in a level and making to the end of a level without losing a life a surprise will occur at the end of the level. You can collect whole star pieces too that do different things, yellow stars warp you to different areas of the level, blue stars, when collected and brought back to the end of a level you can try out one of the five mini-games Kirby TNT offers, and by collecting a red star of a level and making it to the end of the level without losing your life raises the amount of the game you finished and opens up something secret in the end of the game. There is other various power-ups that help raise you six hit long life bar and make you invincible for a short amount of time.
After saying all of this you would probably suspect you control the whole game with the D-Pad but you are very wrong. This game is based off a very unique Tilt system, which requires you to tilt your game boy to move Kirby. The one problem with this system is the glare you are going to get if you play this in a car during the day or a moving light source. But if you play from right under a still light source at home or in a car at night, playing shouldnt be too much of a hassle. Some cool quirks with the control is that you can make Kirby jump in any direction by snapping the game boy in that direction [just dont snap it back into your face]. Also when you collect a flying power-up by pressing A button you can let out Air Puffs to eliminate enemies in the air. Anything else with the control is self-explanatory.
Graphics- For a GBC game this looks very good. There are many animations in both the enemies and Kirby himself and with this much animation with great control you would think Kirby was sitting on top of your screen. Also it is col when you get to the later levels and you get to move through and out holes in the ground because it looks very realistic.
Sound- The sound and music in this game are both top-notch. For the first time I can finally hear Kirbys Very Cute voice either if he is greeting you with a hello at the beginning of the stage or if you hear him screaming at the top of his lungs after falling off a platform. Some other sounds as well as music in the game are actually recycled from older Kirby games, which I think is excellent for Kirby fans [like myself].
Overall- This game is for anyone looking for a little uniqueness in there game boy games. The 30-dollar price tag is surly worth the fun you are going to have with this game.
Mistake- The Life-Bar is actually 6 hits long, very sorry about that.
