My Mom's Backup Drive
Date of Review: Feb 20, 2008
The Bottom Line: I recommend this drive to anyone who wants a simple way to backup their home data - and take it with them.
I've been trying (unsuccessfully) to get my Mom to backup her data on her PC ever since she got her first home computer, back in the early 1990's.
Backing up the Old Way
At first, I suggested she used floppy disks - because that's what everyone used back then. But she almost never got around to it. Later, I gave her her a tape drive and set it up to do it for her automatically - but that had problems for her as well. At the turn of the century, I showed her how to do it with a CD-R/W system - but still, no backups.
Backing up the Fun Way
This Kingston thumb drive is the first system that's made it both simple and even fun for her. Yeah, I said "fun".
She knows how to drag-and-drop files, and since doing so to this drive copies, rather than moves, the file - she is able to safely copy her documents and spreadsheets to the root of this drive. I also showed her how to find her Internet Explorer "favorites" folder, to copy that as well. Finally, she uses Outlook to manage mail, contacts and appointments - so I showed her how to backup that data as well. In just a few keystrokes, she can back everything she needs.
But the fun part comes when she unplugs the drive and hangs it on her key-chain. Just knowing that all her data is right there with her house and SUV keys is a little thrill.
A Cool Feature
While the stuff mentioned so far is common to any old thumb drive, this one has an added feature that I like a lot. My other ones have a little cap that protects the USB plug... but only if you don't lose the cap. Since they aren't attached to the drive itself, losing them is far too easy.
This Kingston drive, rather than capping the plug, retracts it into the case itself - leaving you with nothing to lose.
As I replace my others - I'll be looking for this little feature in the replacements.
