First Thoughts
Great sounding subwoofer. Overall, an awesome purchase. The recommended retail price on this seems a bit high to me, but with some basic searching you can find many reasonable prices. For a 10" sub, it hits very hard and very tight. I'm very happy with this purchase.
Overview of this Subwoofer
Size: 10"
Power (RMS/Peak): 450 watts/ 900 watts
Impedance: 2 or 4 Ohms per coil
Sensitivity: 87.7 (dB 1w/1m)
Sound Quality
The quality of sound this sub produces is very impressive. This sub can really pound, and the whole time it sounds great. This isn't one of those subwoofers made just to rumble distortion really loud. Of course a high quality amplifier (Kicker, Rockford, Alpine, etc.) is important if you want the best sound quality from any good subwoofer.
Enclosure
Another important factor on the sound quality is the enclosure you house it in. I have built several size boxes for this sub for testing to see the impact it had, and the results were very helpful. The Kicker Solo-baric series subwoofers are very sensitive to their enclosure size. Comparing my sealed .66 cubic foot enclosure (minimum rec.) and my sealed 1.0 cubic foot enclosure (Max SQ Rec.), there is an enormous difference in the SQ. In the .66 cubic foot box, it seems like the sub misses some frequencies, and has a considerably less impact than the 1.0 box. It is however, a very little bit tighter. The 1.0 c.ft. box allowed the sub to produce much more penetrating and accurate bass throughout its frequency range, with great sound quality. Learning from this, I built my only vented box to the Max Rec. Specifications. The sound goes to even lower frequencies, and the sound carries farther. Contrasting this, it is also sloppier. I would recommend a sealed box for rock (classic, alternative, metal), jazz, etc. and a ported box for hip hop, rap, etc. I have also found that 1" MDF creates a more solid sound than 3/4" or 5/8" MDF does.
Sound Dampening
For even better sound quality, products similar to Dynamat will greatly reduce rattles that this Solo-Baric might cause. You can use small amounts to reduce known rattles, or apply a large amount to the car to make the bass sound tighter and smoother.
Durability
Over the past year the I have owned this sub, I have never had any problems. The sub has been playing solid ever since I got it, and haven't noticed any degrading in the sound over time. I've played it for a couple of hours pushing well more than 500 watts into it and had no heat problems.
Setup
I installed my audio system myself in my '91 Toyota Corolla. I know its not the nicest car (a pile of junk if you ask me) but I am only 16 years old, and I had to choose between buying a nicer car or an amazing sound system. I'm glad I chose the sound system. The sub is mounted in the trunk, as well as my two amplifiers. I have a Rockford Fosgate Power 450S amplifier powering my subwoofer, and a Power 550X for my Kicker RS Component Speakers. I installed the amps and sub in the trunk due to space constraints, and to allow the amps good ventilation. The installation was fairly easy for me because I have helped install several similar systems. The traceable cutout included with the sub made it easy to cut the square hole (with round corners) in the box. Installing a audio system for the first time can be frustrating and requires patience, but with the detailed yet refreshingly easy to follow instructions that come with this Solo-Baric, your experience should be a good one.
Final thoughts
Great subwoofer all around, well worth the price. Kicker has impressed me over and over with their superior products, and this sub is no different. Well worth the money.
Make sure and give it a roomy enclosure and clean, adequate power!
