Great box set

by   take14theteam ,   Mar 7, 2002

Pros:  great song selection and great recordings

Cons:  a bit pricey if you are not a big jazz fan

The Bottom Line:  A great collection that captures the entire genre of jazz throughout its history.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

The Ken Burns JAZZ: The Story of America's Music box set is a great collection of jazz tunes that will please the ears of any listener of jazz. With five discs the set follows jazz from its beginnings in New Orleans to its spread across American to be the only truly American art form. Arranged in chronological order for the most part, the set includes a wide variety of artists and styles dating as far back as The Livery Stable Blues the first jazz recording ever in 1917 up to some 1990's performances. Of course, with a box set as such which attempts to give a comprehensive view of the genre of jazz, there will certainly be a large number of tracks that do not please your musical palette. For the most part though the selections are great pieces and will be appealing even if they are not in your favorite style. It is a great purchase if you love most jazz music and want a complete collection without buying 20 albums from different artists. If, however, you know that you like one particular style or artist and do not care for others i would recommend staying aways from this expensive set and buy just what you want.
