by  daquan,   Jul 11, 2006

Pros:  Lots of raw power! Far better than anything that I've ever used before!!

Cons:  Short power cord. Expensive! But well worth every penny!! Chef's Bowl won't accept chopping blade.

The Bottom Line:  I highly recommend it!! Powerful, robust, large capacity and a vast array of features make this unit the very ultimate in food processing!!! For the serious professional chef, gourmet cook!!!

Author's Review

WHAT'S THE 411 ON THIS PRODUCT?

First, let me start by saying that before I ultimately decided on getting this particular machine, I went on the hunt for the chance that I might like one of the other brands of food processors. I did an awful lot of research before making my final decision on buying the K'Aid KPFP850PM 16-Cups Food Processor.

I searched both high and low for what I thought would be the very ultimate home processor! Even though they LOOK very powerful and have lots and lots of features galore, here's what I found out. Like the Temptations old '60s song, Beauty is only Skin Deep. Other home food processors can talk the talk, but they definitely CAN'T WALK THE WALK!!!!

They are as follows;

1. Cuisinart:

I once considered, and was about to even buy another Cuisinart processor model! Then I began to see and hear really bad things about this brand. Things that have completely turned me away from ever buying a Cuisinart product ever again!

Once known as the top cream of the crop, the French Chef or the Cadillac of food processors in the late '70s to mid '80s, their machines practically flew up off the store shelves back then! The company makes three top supposedly powerful models now, as well as lower-priced 11-cup models.

One such model is their top-of-the-line DLC-XP, which has a 20-cup capacity work bowl. It's big for its age and size, has been around for many years and has many features galore!

It can make tons of bread dough, chop up to at least 3lbs or more of meat for hamburgers and meat loaf. But as powerful as it might seem, the motor in this unit is a very wimpy one - having only about 780 watts of power! You'd think that a professional-quality food processor such as this would have at least a bit more power than that. And it costs a whopping $800.00 at that!!
Almost double the cost of the K'Aid KPFP850PM! About the only two things that it has going for itself over K'Aid is a longer warranty and a 20-cup capacity work bowl!! That's it!!!

Then there is their lower-priced model that they call the Limited Edition processor. This model was designed after their revamped more contour-shaped units. As with the model above, same thing. Again, loads of features and capabilities, but it also lacks the power of the K'Aid KPFP850PM. Only 720 watts of power! And its feed tube is smaller as well to boot!!

Then again, there still is their even lower priced model, the one with the partly stainless steel boxy-type body. That model also has loads of features, but again, only 720 watts of power in the motor!

A short note here - I've had a Cuisinart ( DLC-7Pro ) for 20 years. It worked great for that time. Now, it's beginning to act up.

The cover and feed tube assembly is now extremely difficult to move into the locked position.
The motor hasn't given up, but I thought that it was now time to move on to bigger and better things.

I gave the machine to a friend, rather than put up with it not working properly!

Also, Cuisinart, in recent years, has cheapened the quality in their food processors, and the feed tube has been made smaller from its previous design. No good.

Conair owns them now, as Epinions.com member Caprig pointed out to me. She is the main reason why I didn't go back to buying another Cuisinart machine!

She was also very influential in getting me to realise that Cuisinart no longer puts the quality and care in their food processors that was there long ago, and that they have resorted to such deplorable and poor materials and workmanship in their piece-of-crap machines. They just don't have the quality like they did 20 some odd years ago.

And I don't think their machines are doing too much flying off the store shelves these days!

And besides, most of Cuisinart's food processors come with only TWO disks. Only their top-of-the-line DLC-XP comes with three disks, as well as the the K'Aid 16-cup KPFP850PM having with THREE disks!!

2. Viking:

Looking at this model, though it looks almost similar in size and shape to the K'Aid 16-Cup KPFP850PM, one might think that it measures up to the K'Aid. And it has some good features as well, such as a die-cast metal base 2 speeds, designer colors and a ten-year warranty on the motor.

But it only has a 14-cup capacity, no wide feed tube and its motor also a wimpy one - only 625 watts, which also isn't as powerful as the K'Aid 16-cup KPFP850PM! About the only thing that it has going for itself over the K'Aid is the longer warranty on the motor!

One member here wrote a review on it saying that the unit's slicing blade is too small for the work bowl!

3. Robot Coupe:

These machines are rated for non-stop food service use and are also commercially rated, but they are way too expensive - costing upward of $1,300.00 or more!! And even THEY are wimpy in terms of power - again, only about 345 watts in the motors for some of them!

I DO however, own their first household model that looked essentially similar in size and shape to Cuisinart's first model when Robot Coupe made the Cuisinart machines.

New on the food processor scene is Robot Coup's Magimix Cuisine System 5150 from France, which is supposed to be commercially rated.

Again, this is still a very wimpy machine with only about a 650-watt motor. It claims to do many things all at once,
looks very modern, sleek and shiny. But still has a very narrow feed tube, which the co. claims is an extra wide one!!

It has three work bowls ranging in size from 3, 9 and 16 cups apiece, has a storage case and a 12-year motor warranty. Yet this machine is still a very wimpy one in terms of power, and the only other thing that it has over the K'Aid KPFP850PM is the longer warranty on the motor!!

4. All Other Brands:

Brands like Sunbeam, Oster, Hamilton Beach, Kenmore (also made by Cuisinart), Black & Decker, Waring and others don't even measure up or come close to or against the K'Aid 16-cup KPFP850PM, also have much wimpier motors and features - and shouldn't even be considered if you are looking for a very truly rugged powerful machine such as the K'Aid KPFP850PM!

Hamilton Beach - in particular; I want to dwell on THIS particular machine just a little bit!

The Big Mouth - the one that the company has been promoting and advertising in a TV commercial in recent months, the company claims that it has an ultra-wide feed tube to the point where you don't need a knife at all to cut anything down to size to make the veggies and fruits fit in the tube. The feed tube LOOKS wider.

The woman in the commercial then BOASTS about the supposedly powerful motor, saying that it has like 450 watts or something like that. Big deal!!! The motor in this flimsily-made machine is STILL a very wimpy one!! And that machine is way too light!! The base is made of a cheap and flimsy plastic one. It's not even heavy like the K'Aid machine is. Fat chance!

The K'Aid KPFP850PM STILL has much more power and muscle than that machine will EVER have!!!

You'd be seriously wasting your money and time investing in one of these wimpy units, I'm telling you!! And who in the Sam Hill knows how long they'll even last? Two, maybe 6 months at that, if you're lucky!

WHAT THEN?

5. KitchenAid:

Now, I've come to what is the very supreme and superb ultimate in food processors!

But at first, I was considering the smaller 12-cup capacity machine - the next one down. It also comes with an array of features like the K'Aid 16-cup KPFP850PM, as well as its own little assortment of accessories stored in the display box and a wide-mouth feed tube. It has a die-cast metal base also.

As good as this model is, and I was very tempted to get it, I thought that I would press on. But the motor is only rated at about 750 watts. I wanted much more gusto than that!!

The K'Aid 16-cup KPFP850PM.

Engineered and geared to be the best and most powerful home food processor on the market. This machine just reeks with professional home quality and awesomeness all through it. There is absolutely no other machine like it on the market for home use, or even one that might come close to it!!

You'll know that it has pure raw power probably just by looking at it. And when you use it, you'll actually even FEEL the power that it has! Well, at least in features and performance. This model is the very best one out there that your money can ever buy! Period!!

WHAT MAKES THIS UNIT BETTER THAN THE OTHER BRANDS?

Well, for one thing, it has a very thick and heavy commercial-quality die-cast metal base. Just one look at this awesome machine and you'll know that you've purchased a true monster!! It has the most powerful motor available in ANY home food processor. No other home machine currently on the market is more powerful!!!

The large 16-cup work bowl is even thicker in comparison to the bowls on the other brands.

Also, it even comes with TWO smaller work bowls to handle smaller jobs so that you can get those pesky little chopping and mincing jobs done that you'd normally use the large work bowl for. No need to tie up the counter with smaller chopping machines and blenders just for chopping garlic or mincing fresh herbs! Or even making small amounts of sauces, mayo and salad dressings.

You get raw power, convenience, versatility and large capacity all in one powerful machine! Plus, this unit is so blasted heavy that it simply cannot be picked up with just one hand from the side. It's so heavy that trying to do this is truly impossible!! It just can't be done. You actually need both your hands to pick this thing up - a sign of pure quality! It's that heavy.

Why, this machine even comes with its own handsome sturdy display box for storing the supplied accessories when not in use!

WHAT ELSE?

There is no other home food processor like this!

The fact that this machine is made from the finest materials and that it easily trounces over anything else that you might have owned or used at home in the past, that alone, makes this machine the very best one for home use. Even the most highly rated food processor is no match for this awesome machine!! There is not one single machine out there that even comes close in terms of power and performance!

And unlike most food processors, this machine has its work bowl handle at an angle to the right when it's locked and engaged with the safety interlock switch!

HOW CAN K'AID AFFORD TO OFFER SUCH A POWERFUL FOOD PROCESSOR?

How can they afford NOT to? This machine easily trounces over any other processor that was ever made for home use! You won't find anything else like it in the world! It is arguably the most powerful home machine - no matter what anyone tries to tell you.

It can even extend slightly beyond home use and has the awesome muscular power to help you run a small catering business with the greatest of ease!!

This truly amazing machine can be seen in use on the Food Network's Iron Chef America by celebrity chefs Bobby Flay, Mario Batali, Mussahouro Morimouto, Cat Cora and Michael Symon!!

In the industrial food service world, the motor in this unit normally would be rated in technical terms of horsepower ratings. This machine has enough power to cater to a small restaurant or small catering affairs and small businesses easily! Yet and still, it will easily dominate well above all other home machines in the culinary world!!

It's truly the most powerful home processor that your money will buy!!

FEATURES AND CONSTRUCTION:

Features and power galore!!!

This machine is just LOADED with ultra-modern conveniences and plenty of raw power! They are as follows:

1. Powerful rugged and robust, the signature centerpiece component of this machine is its high commercial-quality 1,000-watt direct-drive ball bearing induction motor. The beating heart of this extremely powerful machine, it is without a doubt the most powerful one in any home food processor ever, and has a lot of horses under the hood! Makes quick work of the most demanding food processing tasks! You won't find anything else out there with such raw power!! Think of it has the heart that beats in an elephant! You know how powerful an elephant is.

There has been some misinformation on the amount of power in the unit's motor. Some websites list it has having 950 watts, but that info given, is purely false.

It IS listed by K'Aid as having a full whopping 1,000-watt motor. That comes to about a 1-1/4 hp motor in commercially-rated technical terms!! No other home food processor's motor is ever more powerful!!

2. Sixteen-cup extremely durable polycarbonate work bowl, cover and feed tube assembly is tough and durable enough for constant everyday use. Thicker than any of the other brands' work bowls and covers!!

This bowl must be in place in the machine in order to use either the Chefs bowl of the Mini bowl.

The unique tall towering tapered design of the main work bowl combined with the powerful motor helps to created a powerful tornado-like vortex which forces food down into the path of the rapidly-spinning blades. Chef's and Mini Bowls use that same geometrical design as well!

3. Commercial quality for outstanding performance.

4. Chef's Bowl offers a 13-cup capacity for slightly smaller-quantity chopping, slicing and shredding jobs.

5. Exclusive Mini Bowl with its own smaller blade offers much smaller 4-1/2-cup capacity for processing jobs such as chopping garlic or mincing fresh herbs, even whipping butter for garlic bread!

K'Aid is the only brand to offer features 4 & 5 in it's three top models!!

6. Wide-mouth feed tube is larger than on all other brands. Takes on whole citrus fruits, apples and veggies!

7. Comes with a vast wide assortment of supplied accessories, such as the regular metal chopping blade, a Mini-Blade for the Mini Bowl, an egg whipper for beating egg whites for meringues and whipping heavy cream. Egg whipper can only be used with main work bowl.

Also, it comes with three disks - a fine slicing disks and two medium dicks, one for medium slicing and one for medium shredding and a power stem for use with the disks. Also comes with a dough blade and an extended stem attachment for use with the blades and a spatula for cleaning the blades and bowls.

8. All of the above attachments mentioned come stored in their own sturdy plastic display box! The bottom of the box is of the exact same handsome dark gray color as the machine itself!

9. Smartly-designed interlocking system makes certain that the work bowl, cover and feed tube assembly MUST all be securely locked in place for machine to operate.

To remove the work bowl, you MUST twist the cover first, then the whole assembly can be twisted and lifted off the machine.

10. Small control panel is located to the extreme left front of the machine, and is slightly angled for better viewing, has Off, On and Pulse buttons. Protected under rubber pads against damaging dirt, moisture and liquids.

11. Blue indicator light on control panel tells you that the machine is on or is receiving power. If this light does not come on, it indicates that the work bowl, cover and feed tube assembly are not locked into position for use. And even if it DOES illuminated, but the motor does not operate, it shows an indication that the bowl and cover are not engaged with the interlocking system.

12. Owner's manual is the best one that I've seen and read so far! It's very elaborate with easy illustrations and operating instructions on how to use the machine and has quite an array of recipes near the back in the recipe section.

Bonded with rivets and clear plastic front and back covers and thick pages, this manual tells you what you need to know in every detail!

13. Comes with DVD which gives a demonstration on assembly, operating and cleaning instructions and on the certain aspects of the machine. Also, it tells you about the other products in this series line!

14. Two-year hassle-free replacement warranty. If the machine has to be replaced because of a defect, it will be replaced with a new one, and arrangements will be made to pick up the broken machine.

And the 2-year replacement warranty starts all over again from that point on within any part of the original warranty!

15. Glossy shiny baked enamel on handsome dark gray base is very easy to clean with just a damp cloth. Same stunning color as the K'Aid Pro-600 Series Stand Mixer!!

16. Thick very heavy extra-sturdy die-cast metal motor base is also of pure commercial quality for rigid support - the heaviest in the industry! There is absolutely none better!! Will not walk, move or strut its stuff across the counter or table during use, like most other brand will!! Absorbs all operating stresses for a smooth quiet trouble-free operation.

17. Interlocking system can be seen in work bowl's handle. You'll know when it locked when you see the system's activating arm move into position to activate the safety switch when the cover is locked onto the work bowl! The feed tube's pusher assembly makes the final connection.

18. Large convenient and sturdy ergonomically-styled sure-grip handle on main work bowl. Provides comfortable grip when lifting, locking to, or unlocking from motor base.

19. Two-piece food pusher assembly.

20. Four sturdy commercial-style rubber feet help keep machine from vibrating on counter.

21. Convenient recessed carrying handles - one on each side
on the unit.

22. Heavy three-pronged grounded power cord.

23. Uneqalled design and uncompromising performance!! No one else does it better. It's truly the Godzilla of all food processing machines ever to be made!! You'll truly be flabergasted, amazed and in awe!!

24. Stunning side vents designed to allow motor and other internal components to run cooler and with much more operating efficiency.

25. All parts other than the motor base can be washed by hand or in the dishwasher.

26. Base is very easy to keep clean.

27. Matching appliances in the series help to compliment this machine on the counter ( I may get the matching chef's blender next! ).

28. This machine is actually THREE in one because of the amount of work bowls that come with it!

It does the work of a mini chopper, a slicer / shredder and a main unit that purees, chops, slices, grinds, whips AND kneads dough for bread!

USES AND POWER:

The things that could stop a lesser home food processor are duck soup for this wonderful machine!

Use it to help you prepare foods for holiday cooking and baking, foods for wedding receptions, summer cookouts, baby showers, birthday parties, graduations, salads, salad dressings, deli platters, fruit & cheese platters or just for simple everyday meals. Even if you just want to whip up a simple quick snack. The possibilities are totally endless!!

MY EXPERIENCE SO FAR:

Raw power!!

I've already put this amazingly great machine into action, and so far, it feels just like a Mack truck or a race horse!! Super powerful, efficient and robust.

I've used it to slice some veggies for a shrimp scampi, and I've chopped some garlic cloves with it. Then I minced some fresh parsley and whipped up some soft butter for garlic bread with it. Then, just to be power-greedy, I beat
up some wine with flour for the light sauce.

And, even as if that wasn't enough, I used the egg whipper attachment to whip up some soft meringue for a light low-cal lemon chiffon pie!! The machine made simple short work of all these tasks without even batting an eyelash!!

I truly LOVE this machine, and it will probably be the last one that I'll ever have to buy in my entire life!! I just can't say enough about it. I'm totally flabbergasted and in awe!!

I'm so glad that I made the decision to buy this unit. It's the very ultimate in food processing!! This machine is built like a battleship!

I DID manage to get inside the base ( I unplugged the unit first though ). The motor looks kind of small, but don't let it fool you. It REALLY IS STURDY AND POWERFUL!! Don't let it's small size fool you! It has a die-cast metal shell quite similar to the unit's own powerful base. There is sort of a fan disk mounted on the bottom exterior of the motor that spins when the motor is on, to keep the motor cool and the other components in the base.

There is one motor-start capacitor inside as well. I just wanted to see just how well-built the machine is. After that, I re-secured the bottom plate back on.

The bottom plate itself IS made of a very heavy sturdy plastic - much like the jewel box that houses the accessories. An no, the motor ISN'T mounted to this plate in any way.

The three large round flat things that you see around the drive shaft is where the motor is mounted, in my estimation.

But, in addition to its extremely powerful motor, I also
love the sturdy die-cast metal base!! It is like no other
food processor's base made today!! Unlike machines with flimsy plastic bases, this one won't get scratched, marked up cracked or anything else like that at all!!! and it won't warp or distort during use!

WHAT ABOUT NOISE?

Fairly quiet for such a big and powerful food processor, this machine hardly makes ANY noise! The only " noise " that you might hear, if you want to call it that, is when you are chopping up small cubes of Parmesan cheese or hard nuts. Other than the normal very low sound of the motor as it spins the blades and disks at high speed.

But that racket with the cheese or nuts will quiet down in several seconds once they are processed.

CLEANUP AND STORAGE:

Cleanup is a breeze!! Just pop all parts except the motor base in the dishwasher or wash them by hand! Wipe the motor base with a damp cloth or sponge and let it dry. No dirt-catching crevices!

Store the accessories in the supplied display box when not in use. That way, nothing gets misplaced. You won't have to search all over the kitchen to find the accessories!

The three bowls and small chopping blade can be store on the motor base - the way same they were when you unpack the machine from the box

ANY SHORTCOMINGS AT ALL?

Short power cord. It extends out from the back of the machine.

Also, the machine itself is relatively expensive! But it's worth every penny for the awesome power and versatility that it has!!

Other than that, it really shows all of the wimpy competition out there who's boss!!

OVERALL?

Overall, I'd say that this machine has unmatched quality and power!

It's also very expensive, so be prepared to fork over some big bucks if you think you want to buy it! But it's worth every penny!!

It's truly unbeatable and is something to behold!! Even the most elaborate machines from other brands are no match! But you'll get your money's worth - I can guarantee you that, and I kid you not!!! Once you've tried it, you'll NEVER want to settle for anything else with lesser quality!!

IN SHORT:

I absolutely LOVE big powerful heavy duty monster food preparation machines!! I do not like wimpy machines that usually break down often.

Never put up with wimpy food processors that are not powerful enough to stand up to the task at hand! Never put up with flimsily-made processors that can only handle light duty jobs!!

FINAL THOUGHT?

Yes! If you are looking for a good quality food processor that has pure raw power, a vast array of features and is commercially rated, a load of accessories and you're ready to take that ultimate step up to high quality and power, then please consider the K'Aid KPFP850PM 16-Cup Food Processor. It puts the other brands to shame. There is nothing out there that even comes close!!!

This machine IS the only true Cadillac of food processors because it beats the other brands hands down. Ten fold!!

You'll be as truly flabbergasted as I am, as you just gaze at the many features and power that it has in awe!!

But think of it this way; You can buy pure quality and power once, or you can buy wimpy crap forever!! Your choice.

WHERE TO BUY THEM?

I bought this machine from Cooking.com. I saved $50.00 off the top. I even saved on shipping charges by putting in the code number as instructed so that there was no charges for shipping and handling!

K'Aid's own website also sells it. But you'll pay full price for it if you buy it there! Also, Macys.com has it. Look around for best price.

PRECAUTIONS:

This machine may look like a cinch to use, and it very well is, but I MUST point out that there ARE some factors and things that you may seriously need to take into consideration if you plan to buy one.

The factors to try to remember below are as follows:

1. For one thing, it is EXTREMELY HEAVY!!! I'm very serious when I say that you simply can't lift this machine with only one hand. It's way too heavy for that. Please do not try to lift it this way! You could get hurt.

2. The machine may LOOK similar to the basic size of what you might be using now - but it ISN'T. It's very large and bulky due to its extreme commercial rating. The motor base IS larger than most.

Finding a more permanent spot for it on the counter is highly recommended, since it DOES strongly demand a considerable amount of kitchen real estate.

3. Because of the machine's utterly raw power, if it's used incorrectly, you could very well be seriously injured
to the point where you would need immediate medical attention!

4. Since this machine is probably like no other unit that you might have used in the past, electricity may also pose some dangers.

A. A short power-supply cord is provided to help reduce the potential hazard of tripping over it and knocking the machine off the counter. You will need a live outlet close by to use the machine. If not, have a qualified electrician install one there for you.
Do not use an extension cord for this machine.

B. A grounded prong is furnished for safety purposes. Do not remove this third prong. It's there for your safety and well being!

C. Electricity also is at extremely high voltage levels inside the motor base, since the motor uses extremely raw power.. Do not attempt to gain access to this area. The result could be VERY DEADLY!! Even when the machine is unplugged!!

One or more high-voltage-storing capacitors are inside which helps the motor's start windings - enabling the motor to kick into high gear.

It's better to have the unit replaced while it's under the warranty than to try to get into the motor base!

D. Please follow the instruction manual to the letter before using and for best results so that the unit can do best job.

E. To remove any stubborn food residue that may have dried onto the work bowl, cover, feed tube assembly, blades and disks simply soak them in sink with hot soapy water or wash in the dishwasher. Do NOT use any metal scouring pads on these, as you will most certainly mark up the crystal-clear finish and it will become cloudy and dull!

D. Taking these simple measures into use will help give the machine it's long-lasting trouble-free service for the many years to come!

E. Make sure that the Mini Bowl is properly seated inside the regular work bowl, or the cover will not line up correctly with the safety interlock system, and the machine won't come on.

F. Do NOT ignore the warning logos in the manual.

G. Handle ALL both of the chopping blades and the disk blades with extreme care. They are utterly and dangerously razor-sharp, and one false move could prove dangerous, as these blades could injure you severely with nasty cuts and bruises!!

I almost cut my thumb on one of the disk blades while washing them by hand for the first time!! Luckily, the blade just merely grazed the outer skin and there was no bleeding!!!

But you MUST use caution when handling or washing the sharp parts of the blades!!

Be very careful with them when washing them by hand or otherwise. It's best to wash THEM first, and then the bowls, cover and pushers.

H. The motor in this machine is permanently lubricated. No attention on your part is required for this.

An automatic temperature-controlled safety thermostat helps
to prevent overloading of the motor.

Should the temperature of the motor become too hot for any reason, the safety switch will kick in - shutting off the motor.

When the motor cools down, the internal overload switch will reset the motor to operating status. This may take up to as long as 30 minutes.

Did I leave anything out? Haha!!

Thank you for reading this review.

-=-=-=-=-

An update on this amazing machine, though sad;

Even though I still love this extremely powerful machine and it continues to serve me very well, it has come to my attention that K'Aid is no longer making the machine. The unit is still available on their website though at a discount price. What a shame though, that the machine is no longer in production!!

But according to some of the info on this website, the machine is STILL available at certain other websites as well.

You might still be able to get one, but since the machine is no longer in production, it may become even harder and harder to find!! I, along with the few other members here who wrote reviews on it were very lucky and fortunate enough to experience and enjoy the amazing power, convenience and versatility of this monster!!

-=-=-=-=-

I'm happy to announce that this machine is back in production! Macys.com and Cooking.com are selling it, as well as K'Aid's website.

The model number has been changed though to KPFP850OB. But it's still the same great machine!
