Is it the best?
Pros:
Cuervo Reseva de la Familia is hard core tequila.

they overdid the aging, overpowering the agave base and making a slightly unbalanced spirit.
The Bottom Line:
Cuervo Reserva de la Familia is one of the best, probably in the top ten but it lacks something to be the numero uno.

Author's Review
The presentation is traditional with an antique looking bottle and an old looking label, the top is sealed with something plastic that looks like red wax. As a big contrast it is sold in a box that is painted with contemporary looking Mexican art, a different artist every year so makes for a good collectors item if you are into it.
Cuervo Reserva de la Familia is one of the best, probably in the top ten but it lacks something to be the numero uno. It is made in the oldest official distillery, which received their permit from the king of Spain to distill spirits, back then vino de tequila, this was in 1758. There were older distilleries but not producing with a permit given by the conquering Spanish government, which had much favoritism for a small group of people.
This tequila is Cuervos pride, the family reserve as they call it, is their longest aged tequila which remains in a special place in the distillery La Rojena until it is time to bottle it. Much, much, much better than their most popular tequila Cuervo Gold, this tequila is a deep dark caramel, amber color, almost unbelievable. The long aging gives it a very complex array of aromas, which include coffee bean, dark chocolate, dry oak with a long finish. The strong tannins make it almost bitter, throat-tearing liquid that dries your mouth but with a little sweetness. The agave presence is there but faint not like in most tequilas, this could actually be confused by a beginner with bourbon. This is where in my opinion they went wrong, trying to make it too sophisticated they overdid the aging, overpowering the agave base and making a slightly unbalanced spirit.
Cuervo Reseva de la Familia is hard core tequila for the professional drinker that will savor the spirit after a large dinner of heavy spices. I can imagine this big, big guy with a cognac glass filled with dark tequila in one hand and a Cuban habano in the other.
This tequila is much more reasonable that Seleccion Suprema although I personally like Seleccion better, it is much more balanced. The price at $100 is probably a bargain taking in consideration the time it took to mature the agave, produce the tequila and age it, just compare the price of SS $250 up to $300.
