Jonas Brothers - An amazing album
Date of Review: Aug 28, 2007
The Bottom Line: I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys catchy lyrics, fun melodies, and great energy.
First of, I will begin by explaining who exactly the Jonas Brothers are. This band consists of three members, Kevin, Joe, and Nick. Their music is a mix between pop, rock, and some sort of ska-style music. The lead vocals of their music are shared between the two younger brothers, Joe and Nick, while Kevin (the oldest) handles guitar (alongside Nick) and backing vocals. After receiving a lot of attention from Disney Channel, they exploded into a phenomenon and released a second album. They are often compared to Hanson because they are brothers, ranged in age from 13-17 when they began and play the same style of pop punk.
The first track on this album is titled "S.O.S." and is the only song on the album that is solely credited to a single member (as opposed to all three of them). The youngest, Nick, wrote this song himself and sings the verses. Joe sings the main chorus. It is about being in a relationship with someone, but you realize that they aren't right for you and they aren't treating you good. As the chorus goes, "This is an S.O.S. don't wanna second guess, this is the bottom line..." This song is a pop-punk song with a mix of some techno beats and accents. It's a fun, short song. I believe the highlight of the song is the breakdown towards the end where Joe sings with barely any instruments in the background. They have such pure voices that make this part sound amazing.
Definitely the most popular song from this album, track two is called "HOLD ON". This song is your average "when you're knocked down, don't give up, stand tall" sort of song. The techno-strings added in the song add a softer sound to this otherwise rather heavy song. It's a wonderful song to listen to and is rather catchy. At the end, the chorus is played without any instruments and you hear just how good their harmonies are. Definitely one of the best songs on the album.
My personal favorite is track three "GOODNIGHT AND GOODBYE". This song is about a rocky relationship that you think needs to come to an end, and it's best to end it quick instead of dragging it out (say goodnight and goodbye and move on instead of wallowing on it.) It's a very fun sort of ska verses with a melodic chorus. The musical style of this song is a little hard to explain, but it's definitely very creative and interesting. Towards the end, there is a breakdown of just drums underneath the chorus and it sounds really cool. Very catchy and fun to dance to.
The fourth track, "THAT'S JUST THE WAY WE ROLL" is a very entertaining, humorous song (lyrics like "there's a whale in the pool with my mother" and "pop and lock, battle dance against Hansen"). The song is about being exactly who you are and not caring what others thinks. It's got a sort of surfer feel to it (in my opinion). It's one of those songs that just makes you want to jump around and go crazy cuz it is such an energetic song and you just have to sing along.
The next track "HELLO BEAUTIFUL" is a beautiful track and so well written. It's short, acoustic, and simple, but pure genius. It's about missing someone very much and telling them that they mean a lot to you (lyrics like "Cuz I could go across the world and see everything and never be satisfied, if I couldn't see those eyes"). It's a gorgeous song that shows just how pure and strong the voice of Nick and (especially) Joe are.
"STILL IN LOVE WITH YOU" is the next song on the album. It's a fun song about a relationship that is over, but you didn't really want it to end. It's a catchy, fun song with a wonderful guitar solo in the middle followed by a cool breakdown, but I am sad to say, is probably one of their less exciting songs on the album. It's not a bad song, but it just doesn't grab your attention as much as the other songs. Let me put it this way, it was easy for me to write about the other songs so far, but this one has me at a loss for words because it just didn't grab me that much.
"AUSTRALIA" is one of the better songs in my opinion. It's just a cute song. That's the best way to describe it in my opinion. It starts out thinking it's going to be a regular old rock song about dumping someone, but then goes soft at the chorus and talks about someone's dream girl and knowing she's worth waiting for. After the chorus, it jumps back into the rock style and then back to the soft part. It's a fun catchy song that really grabbed me.
"GAMES" is a great song to just jump around to. It's about being in a relationship with someone who's sort of toying with you and not treating you the as well as they could. The reason for the title is that they are playing games with you, but the creative Jonas Brothers cleverly put the titles of some games into the lyrics ("SORRY for the TROUBLE" and "so BORED (wrong spelling, but the idea is still there) with these GAMES"). The bridge is a cool overlap of different lines from the song followed by some new words that sounds very cool. Definitely a fun song.
Probably the prettiest song on the entire album "WHEN YOU LOOK ME IN THE EYES" is the next track. It's one of the prettiest ballads I have ever heard in my life. It's just about being in love with someone and telling them that they mean a lot to you and when you are with them, nothing else can bother them (lyrics like "when you look me in the eyes, and tell me that you love me, everything's alright..."). This song is another one that shows just how beautiful the voices of these guys actually are. It's a wonderful song and words can't really describe what it sounds like. It's just...gorgeous.
The next track, "INSEPARABLE" has, in my opinion, some of the most creative lyrics on the entire album ("you know when the sun forgets to shine, I'll be there to hold you through the night, we'll be running so fast we could fly"). It's just about promising someone that they won't ever leave them and they will always be there. It's a really punk-ish style song. Definitely worth a listen too. It' got great guitars and drums, but also has strings mixed in to which gives it sort of a mystical feel.
"JUST FRIENDS" is the next track and is a fun song that I love to listen too. This song is sung entirely by Nick Jonas and personally, the lyrics don't make sense to me because Nick Jonas is 14 and throughout the course of the song, he sings about how two people are just friends, but end up getting married. However, if you ignore Nick's age, it is wonderful, cute song that kind of makes you go "AW..." it's a fun, upbeat song that is one of my favorites.
Personally, I don't totally understand the lyrics of the next track "HOLLYWOOD" ("Politicians stand between the lines of making headlines, street signs saying you're going the wrong way). I think the song is about not getting sucked into the celebrity-ness of Hollywood and being famous and staying true to your values and morals, but I can't be sure. Even though, I don't understand the lyrics, I have to say this is one of my favorite tracks. It's catchy and has fun music. There is a piano bit to it that sounds really cool. It's a fun song that I really love to listen to and makes you want to jump around.
The main song that started the Jonas Brothers is called "YEAR 3000". It was released on their first album, but people loved it so much, they re-released it on this album. It's a fun song about finding a time machine and traveling to the year 3000 (lyrics say: "I took a trip to the year 3000, this song had gone multiplatinum. Everybody bought our seventh album, it had outsold Kelly Clarkson). It's catchy, upbeat, and fun to sing along to. Definitely, a favorite among Jonas Brothers fans everywhere.
The last song on the album, "KIDS OF THE FUTURE" is from the Disney Movie, Meet the Robinsons. It's a spin off of the song "Kids In America". For example, the chorus goes "We're the kids of the future. Everybody live cuz the future is now". It's a fun song and if you have seen the movie, it makes a lot more sense. Fun to sing along too, catchy, and energetic. Personally, I think it showcases Joe Jonas's voice wonderfully.
This album is the debut of a new style of music called CDVU+ (CD View Plus). Once put into the computer, this album becomes a 50-page virtual book full of exclusive pictures, videos, lyrics, and even hidden links to websites accessible exclusively through the CD. The only negative about it was that you had to have specifically QuickTime 6 to view the videos. No other QuickTime will play. But it's a wonderful bonus to the cd.
