Author's Review
My daughter has an interesting media library. Some days she listens to The Ramones, others she may want to listen to bluegrass or Black Sabbath. But, mostly she likes to listen to singers from the likes of Hannah Montana, Corbin Bleu and of course, the Jonas Brothers. The Jonas Brothers are probably the only ones I do not object to if we're in a car and she wants to blast music from the vehicle's speakers because I like the youngest, Nick Jonas's, singing voice a fair bit. That, and the songs are so fun and catchy.
The Jonas Brothers band is composed of three brothers, Joe (lead), Nick, and the oldest, Kevin. For my daughter and her friends, they are the New Kids on the Block of the late 80's and the Backstreet Boys of the late 90's...today. (You'll understand better if you remember the "teen sensation" those caused) I think they're much better than the teeny-bop bands I was" sooo into" as a preteen because they actually play their own instruments. They are usually compared to the band from back when, Hanson, because they are brothers and young. To me though, they have a little bit more of a rock sound.
This album was released in August of 2007 and contains a lot of their (now) popular songs. Here are a list of the tracks on the album:
1. S.O.S.
(This song is mostly sung by the youngest, Nick while Joe does the bulk of the chorus. Nick wrote this one himself about a breakup. It's about being with someone who is not treating you too wonderfully, and you realize that they aren't the one for you. It has a pop sound to it like most of their songs with a tiny element of rock. It is one of the more popular Jonas Brothers songs and played on Radio Disney quite often. )
2. Hold On
(This is one of my daughter's favorites because she thinks of it as one that is easy to dance around to. It has a bit of techno rock sound, and is basically all about picking yourself up when you're knocked down. There are a lot of harmonic vocals in this one and it helps with the theme of the song. It's a really good song and has a pretty good message.)
3. Goodnight and Goodbye
Another of my daughter's favorites because of it's dance-ability. She's really into those songs that you can get up and just move around to. It's not one of my favorites however, since I prefer their softer tunes. This one is upbeat but the lyrics aren't so much. It's about breaking up, and just ending a relationship quickly rather than dragging your feet about breaking up with them. The music is really nice though and the drums sound great.)
4. That's Just the Way We Roll
(This one seems like a song about being yourself. It is constantly played on Radio Disney and was all over the Disney Channel as well as is on several Disney albums. Definitely one of their more popular songs, it has a pop sound and has cutesy guitar accompaniments. The lyrics are fun too from "I woke up on the roof with my brothers...." to "there's a whale in the pool with my mother" and the chorus picks up "we are wild, we are free, we are more than you think...". It's just a fun song to sing along to and one that the little kids can dance all day long to.)
5. Hello Beautiful
(This is more the type I enjoy. Nick and Joe sing a bit softer as they sing about how much they love the person that they are now missing very much. It's a really pretty, and very sweet song. The lyrics are really good to boot and could rival any other band's. )
6. Still in Love With You
Pretty much the majority of the songs on this album had to do with breaking up or relationships on the rocks. This song is really no exception. It is about a relationship that has ended but you miss the person badly and still care for them. It's one of the weaker songs on the albums and definitely one that you hear the least about. It is upbeat which is a little odd concerning the lyric content, IMO, but it makes the song seem fun and catchy. It's fun to sing along too, but my daughter usually "skips" it on the CD player.
7. Austrailia
This was a good idea for a song. It starts out really upbeat and somewhat rock but then it goes to the chorus and it's really soft and harmonic while they sing about a girl that's "worth waiting for". The chorus stays soft throughout and it's such a great contrast; it just works. Nick and Joe have a great sound in this song and it's one of the ones I and my daughter both enjoy.
8. Games
This is another song my daughter thinks is one to get up and dance around to. I do not disagree with her, although she will have to dance solo. It is a really upbeat ska sound and sounds like a fun song. The Jonas Brothers have cleverly put titles to popular board games, or words associated with games in the lyrics to the song. It may have been an afterthought, but, this song has been referred to by some as the board game song. It's about, again, relationships. It's about someone who is playing games with you/your heart.
9. When You Look Me in the Eyes
(Another popular song of the Jonas Brothers, and the ninth track on this CD. This song is a slower tune and really showcases Nick and Joe's voices. It is a sweet song about being in love with someone, and letting them know how much they mean to you. Also, it's about letting that person know how much you appreciate their love. It's a really pretty song and really separates them from their "teen sensation" image and puts them up there with adult musicians. This is one of my favorite songs of theirs.)
10. Inseperable
The tenth song is about always being there for someone, and promising never to leave them. In other words, you two would be inseparable. It's a really nice song and has decent lyrics. There are the usual guitars and drums but this one also features a few strings as well which give it a sweeter sound. Not one of my daughter's favorites, but rank a little higher than some for me.
11. Just Friends
This song is sung entirely by Nick Jonas, who IMO has the better voice. The song is about two people that start out as just friends, but they grow closer and one day get married. A lot of their songs are personal, but unless this one is written about someone else, I don't see anything too personal in it, since they are all still young and unmarried. Regardless, it is a nice song, a little fun and catchy, and one my daughter likes to sing along to. The lyrics are really cute.
12. Hollywood
Hollywood is about not getting swept up in the drama of Hollywood and staying true to yourself. I guess basically about avoiding turning out like artists such as Britney Spears et al. who start out innocent then get swept up and lost. (Doesn't go that far as to say that, but brings that to my mind since the lyrics are about holding to your morals and values and etc and not getting lost in the celebrity life). It's one of those jumpy songs kids might like to dance to, but my daughter has no real interest in this song, so she usually skips it. The lyrics are decent, and the piano included sounds really great, but, it's just too upbeat for my tastes.
13. Year 3000
This is an odd song about traveling to the year 3000. The lyrics are really fun though, and go on about in the year 3000 this song will be insanely popular, they will have sold numerous albums, and even outsold all the popular similar bands. This is one of their first songs that really jetted them to being where they are now and it's a bit of a repeat, since it was on a first album. But, it's still a fun song and my daughter raves on it still, mainly because it is so upbeat and the lyrics are catchy and fun..
14. Kids of the Future
On the insert, it states this song was on the animated film that came out a while back, Meet the Robinsons. Joe pretty much is the main vocal on this one, but the song is really upbeat and fun. It is a lot like the Kids of America song by Kim Wilde, only words are changed and it's a bit more "Jonas". Elements of rock meets pop, and you have a song that kids are sure to love.
Finally, there are extras with this CD. The songs "Hold On", "Kids of the Future", "Year 3000" and more are in CDVU+ and if you insert the CD into your computer, you will get access to 10 videos, 75 printable photos, lyrics, a personalized autographed poster creator, and hidden links.
You do need Quicktime 6 to view, but it's only a few clicks until you are set. The extra photos and videos were a hit with my daughter, and I liked the added lyrics because I don't listen to the songs as religiously as my daughter to learn them all by heart. The Jonas Brothers, I like because they are scores more talented than teen bands (or, groups that sang for the teen demographic) I had in my era, and they seem like the "boys next door", really great kids. So, I'm glad that my daughter gets a group such as them for her childhood.
I would recommend this Cd to any young (or grown) fan of the Jonas Brothers' music. Most of the songs are rather upbeat and seem like soft-core rock, but there are some really sweet ballads on here as well that really showcase Nick and Joe's voices. I paid around $11 for my daughter's CD at Amazon.com but I've seen this is CD shops as well.
