I will admit that I was expecting good things when I purchased this disc. I have always considered Pat Methany to be a very unique jazz composer and instrumentalist, so I was fairly certain that this disc would be a satisfactory investment.
The majority of the album is very dynamic and vividly displays the similar and diverse talents of Jim Hall and Pat Methany. Methany boasts a variety of instruments including electric, acoustic, classical, and 42-string guitars, while Jim Hall auditions solely with electric. The electric and acoustic melodies work magic together in most of the tracks like "Summertime" and "The Birds And The Bees". However, the one qualm I do have with this album is the five experimental tracks that Hall and Methany collaborated. These particular selections sound more to me like Hall and Methany are trying to tune their instruments than make music.
In short, I would describe this disc an equal fluctuation of mellow and spirited melodies, with occasional dribble. However, it is a solid performance by two household names in instrumental jazz. Combined with the fact that it's a quality 24-bit recording put out by Telarc, one of the finer jazz labels, I'd say it's worth adding to your collection at least.
