This movie first caught my attention when I was very young. It lured me deep into it's folds; with it's beauty,adventure, and deep emotional struggles.
The scenery is breath taking drawing one into it with smells, sounds, and feelings of the outdoors. The smell of the trees, the crisp winter air, even the smoke from the the fire fills one's nostrils. The elk bugling in the distance took the viewer away from the confines of present surrounds to a far off primitive place. This beauty makes one feel comfortable, strong, and confident; like a trophy on the mantle. Saying to everyone these things I have conquered, so they are mine to enjoy right, here right now.
There was adventure at every turn fighting Indians,villians,and nature; not mention the scene with grizzly bear. This is an adventure story from the minute Jeremiah steps of the boat to the end scene.
The emotional struggles abound throughout the story. Our adventurer runs to the mountains to escape his past. There is never hint of a misfortune in his past, but a desire to escape the emotional baggage of a war. He finds himself in a mental struggle freezing and near to starvation. This an excellent story taken to the movie screen. If you have not seen it, do.
