Million Dollar Baby Jenny Lind Crib--Beauty That Will Last Generations
Date of Review: Aug 21, 2000
The Bottom Line: This crib has lasted through at least five children (my four and one other), and could easily last many more.
When I was pregnant with my first child five years ago, money was extremely tight. I was buying as much as I could afford to, and almost all of it was from a second-hand shop.
Every time I walked into that shop I would go over to this Jenny Lind Million Dollar Baby Crib and look it over. It was by far the most beautiful crib I had ever seen. Unfortunately for my cheap mind, there were cheaper, more plain looking cribs in the store. I assumed I would end up buying on of the plain cribs.
I was absolutely floored when, about a month after spotting this crib, my in-laws offered to buy a crib as their gift for the new baby. They intended to buy a brand new one, but I asked my mother-in-law to take a trip to the second-hand shop with me to look at the one I was in love with. Being second-hand, the Jenny Lind crib was actually cheaper than the one they were looking at in Wal-Mart, and it included the mattress (which saved them another $30).
This crib had been through one child already (information I learned from the store owner who had taken it in on trade) and still looked almost new. There were only a few small scratches on the tops of the rails from a baby who had decided it was a tasty teether.
When I got this crib home and set it up in my nursery I was so pleased with it. It is very beautifully designed, with it?s designed spindles all the way around. Not only are the side slats done in turned spindles, but also the top rail of either end of the crib. The only parts of the crib not done in turned spindles are the top and bottom rails of the sides.
The color of my crib is darker than the one shown on this page. I do not know whether it was purchased this way or was stained to match the previous owner?s nursery, but the color is wonderful.
The mattress level of this crib is fairly easy to change. I can do it by myself if necessary, but it is easier to do with someone else?s help.
I love the durability of this crib. Even though it had been through one child when I bought it, it still seemed like new. All the connections were still tight; there was no wobble to this crib at all. Even now, after I have used it for my three children, it is still in prime condition. It is still tight and sturdy, with no signs of weakness whatsoever.
I only have one problem with this crib. The drop-side mechanism is quite difficult to work. If you don?t already have it down before you go to put a sleeping baby in the crib, forget about it! To drop the side you have to use one hand to lift up a little while depressing the release mechanism with your foot. It is quite awkward to manage. I simply chose to leave the side down when I would get my babies out, and that way it was ready when I wanted to put them back in.
I would recommend this crib to anyone. I am still as in love with it as I was when I first spotted it. It has the type of durability that will keep it going strong for years to come. I intend to keep this crib in storage and give it to my son when he is expecting his first child.
