Author's Review
When I was pregnant with my first daughter, Miranda (now 21 months), we were blessed enough to be able to receive a good amount of our baby gear as hand-me-downs from a few other Marine Corps families. Considering our financial situation at the time was not as secure as it is now, this was extremely helpful to us. One of the items that we received was our daughters crib, a Jenny Lind Crib, in an attractive Maple finish. It is also available in 3 other non-toxic finishes (with no lead-based paint) - Oak, Natural and White.
The crib had been disassembled for easy transport, but our friend still had the original assembly instructions saved. It was a snap to put together. It only took my husband about 15 minutes to put it together, and all it required was a screwdriver and the included hex wrench. The assembly instructions were straightforward and easily understood you dont need a degree in Engineering to put together this crib, unlike some of the other baby equipment that weve acquired!
The Jenny Lind Crib is attractive with its traditional spindle rails. There are also plastic teething rails on each of the long sides, which is a nice treat. While it is widely available for sale in stores priced at around $100-$150, the looks of the crib do not reflect its bargain price it doesnt look cheaply made at all to me. There is also a coordinaring changing table available that is also quite inexpensive.
The spindles on the Jenny Lind Crib are 1 3/4 apart, with the corner slots measuring at 2 1/4 apart. These measurements meet and exceed the current US Federal Safety Standards. This crib has also received the Juvenile Product Manufacturers Association seal of approval. This is an important thing to check when buying (or receiving as a gift) cribs second-hand. A lot of older cribs werent made to these standards, and there is risk of injury to your baby.
The standard 52x28 crib mattress fits snugly in the provided space. There are no dangerous gaps.
There are three features to the Jenny Lind Crib that I like very much. First, the side that raises and lowers is a hands-free system (uses a foot bar). This is a very convenient feature! Also, there are removeable leg casters that allow for easy mobility of the crib (just dont roll it around with baby inside!). Finally, the Jenny Lind Crib has 4 different mattress positions, and the heights are quite easy to adjust. This is definitely helpful as baby grows and becomes more mobile. Lowering the mattress reduces the risk of your toddler climbing out of the crib and toppling over the side!
The Jenny Lind Crib is stable and sturdy. I have not had any problems with it, even though my daughter is quite active! It is easily cleaned just dust to keep it looking shiny and new!
Even though the Jenny Lind Crib that I have is now on its 4th child (our friend used it for all 3 children!), it is holding up just fine! There is no paint chipping and I know that my daughter has done her fair share of chewing on the rails! The only thing is that the side that lowers is getting somewhat squeaky but it really isnt an issue to me.
All in all, I feel as though the Jenny Lind Crib is an excellent value and I highly recommend it!
