Jeep Wrangler Sport - Not for the faint of heart
Date of Review: May 29, 2005
The Bottom Line: A rough and tumble vehicle that is tons of fun for the right people
This car is not for everyone. Having said that, I absolutely love this car!
Note: This review is written by a girl, so don't expect too much mechanical input from me.
I wanted a Jeep Wrangler for about a year before I bought one. I had a few acquaintances who had owned them and they all told me that I would hate it. I went ahead and bought a used one anyway 11 months ago.
For the first month, I hated it and thought I had made a HUGE mistake. It was bumpy, and very noisy. But I don't have the hard top, so I can't speak for the decrease in noise with one. I kept reminding myself of the previous winter's snowstorm in which my Chevrolet Cavalier had been plowed under 5 feet of snow. So I perservered.
After a month or so, I was able to subconsciously predict how much I would be bouncing with each bump and dip in the road, and thus the bumpiness problem disappeared. For me, anyway, but not my passengers. Like the bumper sticker says: get in, sit down, shut up and hang on.
The noise problem is still there - it is hard to hear the radio at highway speeds. Hard to hear the boyfriends, too, so maybe this is a pro. I have the 4 speaker system (2 in the dash, 2 on the rollbar), but I am thinking of getting the 7 speaker system with the subwoofer.
BUT this past winter was brutal in the northeast, and in 2 or 4 wheel drive, this car got me everywhere I needed to go. No worries about digging it out in the morning - just floored it and off I went.
I have not had a mechanical problem with it yet. The engine is easy to get around, and you gotta love a car that has buckles on the hood.
My Wrangler is a 5 speed manual transmission. Shifting is easy, but the throw was a little longer than I was used to.
As a single girl, I have not had any issues with the storage capacity. The back seat and the "trunk" area are adequate for me. One other issue is that it can be hard to lift heavy items into the car, but this is true for ANY 4x4.
In a nutshell, this Jeep is not for everyone, and is most certainly not designed for comfort or speed. It is a fun, all purpose utility vehicle that handles New York winters with ease. Test drive one before you buy!
