The Bottom Line: Buy something more reliable!!!
I leased a new 2002 Wrangler. It has had nothing but problems. First, when I would turn the key to start the engine, about 20% of the time nothing happened. I turned it in to the dealer to get fixed. They said they couldn't duplicate the problem so they couldn't fix it. (Like I was making this problem up). They said to wait until it does it again and have it towed. I believe I turned it in about 3 times until the problem was fixed.
I noticed paint was peeling from the hinges that hold the front windshield up. I made and appointment and turned it in again to get that fixed. When I picked up the car, it hadn't been fixed yet because they didn't have time, so I had to be inconvienenced again and turn it in another day.
I got an oil change at a Valvoline store and they told me I needed fuel injector cleaner so I bought it. The next day my serve engine light came on and my car was running like crap. It sounded like the engine was chocking. I brought it in to be fixed. They said a spark plug missfired so they replaced it. Guss what? The next day the serve engine light came on. I took it in again and another spark plug was replaced. Once again my serve engine light came on. On my third trip to the service department they carbon blasted something. That seemed to do the trick.
My 4 wheel drive started having problems. It would grind when I tried to change gears or would not change gears at all. Also I had problems with it falling out of 4 wheel drive while I was driving down the street. When this happens, if you touch the gas, nothing happens so your stranded until you can force it back into gear. I have now turned the Jeep in 4 times to fix this problem. I haven't had any problems since the last time I turned it in, but we haven't had any snow here since then so I haven't really used the 4 wheel drive.
The interior parts are also made cheaply. I broke one of the knobs that selects if you want AC or heat or off.
I have a hard top. It takes 3 people to lift it. We built a hoist in our garage to lift the top, but it still takes a good 20 minutes to unscrew all the bolts and disconnect the rear windshield wiper.
Basically, I would not recommend this car due to the incompetent service staff at Jeep dealers. I've turned it in to two different dealers in my area and both took multiple times to fix one problem.
In the first year I owned my Jeep, it was in the shop over 12 times! I guess I'm getting my moneys worth in warranty work.
