Author's Review
Last summer it was time for my dad to get another SUV. After a few months of looking around, in May of 2000 he bought a Red 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Edition. It had 65,000 miles on it. His is a 4.0L 6 Cyl. engine.
His is loaded with leather, sun-roof, wood grain finish, CD player and gold package. His has eight ply tires, they are really big, possibly too big for this truck but that's what he likes.
Engine Oil Pressure Gauge (standard):
Indicates engine oil pressure. This gauge does not measure oil level. Normal readings are 20-70 psi in city driving and 45-70 psi at highway speeds. Pressure vaires with engine speed, temperature and oil viscosity. Hot engine idle pressure of 13 psi is satisfactory. Consistent lower readings indicate possible malfunction. Seek authorized service.
ABS Light (standard):
Illuminates to indicate Anti-Lock Brake system self-check in process at vehicle start-up. If light remains on after start-up or comes on and stays on at road speeds, it may indicate that the ABS has detected a malfunction or has become inoperative. If this happens contact the dealerships immediately!
Cruise Light (standard):
The cruise control on this vehicle is very difficult to sit! The indicator lights when the electronic speed control system is turned on.
Power glass sunroof (optional):
The electronically controlled sunroof can be vented or opened to any position along the track. The control is located in the overhead mini-console above the review mirror. In order to opent he sunroof, press the rocker switch rearward.
Rear Window Wiper/Washer (standard):
A three position slider switch on the right hand pod adjacent to the steering column controls operation of the Rear Wiper/Washer function. Sliding the switch to either the "Delay" position or the "On" position will activate the wiper.
Roof rack (standard):
To adjuct the crossbars, depress the button to release inner holding pic. Slide to the next locking position (about 3 inches). Alternate sides until the crossbars are positioned correctly for your cargo and stanchions are locked square to the slide rails.
CD Changer Capability (optional):
The radio is compatible with a CD player that is only available from your Chyrsler Corporation dealer. While driving along rough roads the CD player may skip momentairily. This will NOT damage the CD. The disc may stop playing if it becomes to hot. After 20-30 seconds the message CD HOT will appear and the unit with switch to the radio rmode. The message PAUSE will appear. COLD will show in the display if the unit is below operating temperature and detects an error. The unit will then switch to the radio mode.
Automatic Temperature Control (optional):
The Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) system automatically maintains the interior comfort level desired by the operator. This is accomplished by using several sensors. An interior air temperature sensor is mounted on the instrument panel to the right of the climate control panel. An outside temperature sensor is located behind the grille at the front of the vehicle. There is also a solar sensor positioned near the defrost vents on top of the instrument panel. The solar sensor will monitor the heat of the sun on your upper body and adjust interior climate for your comfort.
2WD Position:
This position is for driving on hard-surfaced roads under normal driving conditions when 4-wheel drive is not desired.
4x4 Part Time Position:
The position is designed for temporary use of 4-wheel drive when on or off-pavement conditions such as deep snow or heavy ice requre increased traction. When engaged, both front and rear axles are mechanically locked together and turn at the same speed. Do not use 4x4 Part Time on dry paved roads.
To engage, shift transfer case lever from 2WD to 4x4 Part Time while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed.
4x4 Full Time Position:
This is the primary 4-wheel drive position which offers better traction than 2WD when roads are wet, snow covered or icy. When engaged, front and rear axles can turn at different speeds to improve maneuverability. Use Selec-Trac 4x4 Full Time year round on all road surfaces you wish.
To engage, shift trasfer case from 2WD to 4x4 Full Time while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed.
When shifting from 2WD through 4x4 Part Time to 4x4 Full Time, two momentary releases of the accelerator pedal may be required to complete the shift in the transfer case.
Over ALL:
Over all we are very satisfied with the exciting ride, and abilites that the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee has to offer! Allthough it is a gas hog! It's a blast to drive! I recommend one to young singles, families and seniors! It drives very well for an SUV.
